Adjusting your video layout during a virtual meeting in zoom App
During Zoom meetings, you can customize your video layout preferences-see everyone, hide participants, and more. When there is no screen sharing, four video layouts are available: Speaker view, Gallery view, Immersive view, and floating thumbnail window. View the screen share with Speaker view or Side-by-side mode when someone is screen sharing. With the exception of the floating thumbnail view, any of these layouts can be used in fullscreen or windowed mode.
You can also rearrange the gallery view order, pin or spotlight up to nine videos, hide non-video participants, or stop all incoming video.

Speaker view
The large video window will switch between participants speaking with 3 or more other participants in the meeting when speaker view is enabled. Only you and one other participant will be able to see your video, while their video will appear below yours.
If you pin a participant, they remain the largest video in your meeting view, while spotlighting does the same for everyone.
Gallery view
Participants can view thumbnail images of themselves in Gallery view, which expands and contracts as they join or leave a meeting. On a single screen of the Gallery view, the desktop client can show up to 25 or 49 participants depending on your CPU.
If there are more attendees than the number of thumbnails per page you can display, the system creates additional pages with your maximum number of thumbnails per page. The next page of participants will be displayed by clicking the right or left arrows in gallery view as you navigate through the pages.
Also in Gallery view, you can re-arrange the order of the videos based on your needs, as well as save them for use in future sessions. This feature is described in the support article, Setting a custom gallery view order.
As a participant begins to speak in Gallery view, the speaker is relocated to the current page you are viewing and highlighted, making it easier to identify who is speaking. In the case of custom gallery orders, this functionality is not available, as the order will remain in place.
Full-screen meeting window
You can switch to full-screen mode by double-clicking the Zoom window in any of the layouts (except for the floating thumbnail window).
Alternatively, you can press Esc on your keyboard to exit full-screen mode.
Note: On older versions of macOS, click Meeting in the top menu bar and select Enter Fullscreen.
Floating thumbnail window
Zoom can be minimized while the floating thumbnail window is kept on top of other open applications. The video window can be moved around your screen, or completely hidden.
To switch to floating thumbnail view, follow these steps:
- For Windows, click the minimize icon, which is located at the top-right corner, for Mac users, it is located at the top-left corner.
- Click the arrow on the left side of the video to collapse it once in mini-window view. You can expand it again by selecting the arrow.
- By pressing the and buttons respectively, you can also mute or unmute yourself, or turn off your video while in this mode.
- The floating thumbnail window can be closed by clicking the arrow on the right side to return to the full Zoom window.
Layout when screen sharing
The following 3 options are available when viewing shared content:
- Standard:
- The shared content is below the other video tiles, similar to the Speaker view. Fullscreen mode fills the screen with the shared content and video tiles become smaller, movable thumbnails.
- Side-by-side: Speaker:
- Meeting windows in the side-by-side mode are split between shared content and video thumbnails, so you can adjust how they are split between the two. The active speaker will only appear in the portion of the page containing video thumbnails.
- Side-by-side: Gallery:
- The meeting window in side-by-side mode is split between the content being shared and video thumbnails, and the proportions of the split are adjustable. In the portion containing video thumbnails, the gallery will display a maximum of 6 videos (when the shared content receives the most space) or 49 videos (when the shared content receives the least space).
The meeting window can also be maximized for any of these views to be used.
How to hide participants who have their video turned off
- If you’re viewing a video layout, click on the three dots next to any thumbnail video that has its video off or joined by telephone.
- To hide all participants without video, click Hide Non-video Participants.
- Click the View button at the top-right corner of your screen and select Show Non-Video Participants to re-display the non-video participants.
To preserve bandwidth or prevent mental fatigue, you can also stop all incoming video.
