Changing settings in the desktop client/mobile app in zoom App
It is possible to change some Zoom settings without logging into the Zoom web portal by using the Zoom desktop client or mobile app.
Windows
Zoom desktop client settings can be accessed by following these steps:
- Open Zoom on your computer.
- Navigate to Settings by clicking your profile picture.
- This will open a windows on your screen with an array of options to choose from, including:
General
Meeting and chat settings can be changed.
- Start Zoom when I start Windows:
- Upon Windows startup, Zoom will open and display.
- Silently start Zoom when I start Windows:
- Start Zoom as soon as Windows starts, but minimize it in the taskbar.
- Keeping Zoom open in the taskbar notifications area when Zoom is closed is a better option than minimizing it to the task bar.
- During a meeting, use two monitors that are connected to the same screen to play both video and screen share content.
- During the start of a meeting, or when joining one, enter full screen automatically.
- Automatically copy invite link after the meeting starts
- Always show meeting controls:
- You can always see the meeting controls during the meeting. As long as your mouse pointer remains inactive for a few seconds, meeting controls will be hidden if disabled.
- Ask me to confirm when I leave a meeting:
- If you click Leave Meeting, you will be prompted to confirm your decision to leave the meeting.
- Show my connected time:
- Shows the duration of your current meeting.
- Remind me __ minutes before my upcoming meetings:
- Give me a notification a few minutes before each meeting begins.
- Stop my video and audio when my device is locked
- Integrate Zoom with Outlook:
- Show Zoom contacts’ status, as well as setting Zoom as your default app for chatting, meeting, and making phone calls in Outlook for Mac.
- Show profile photos next to in-meeting chat messages
- Show “Pair with Room” feature on home screen navigation bar
- Automatically keep Zoom up to date:
- Installs updates on Zoom desktop.
- The user has the option of choosing Slow or Fast update cadences. To find out how automatic updates work, read on.
- Reaction Skin Tone:
- When using emoticons or meeting reactions, select the default skin tone.
- View More Settings:
- You can adjust settings that aren’t available in Zoom’s desktop client by logging into the Zoom web portal.
Video
Changing your camera and viewing your video feed is easy.
Camera
- Camera:
- This will let you choose which camera Zoom will be using.
- Video ratio:
- Aspect ratios are usually 4:3 or 16:9, but Original Ratio is generally the most desirable.
My Video
- Mirror my video:
- Rotate your video horizontally. In the case of cameras that have a default setting of flipping video, this option could be useful.
- Touch up my appearance:
- To minimize the appearance of imperfections on the skin, apply a softening effect.
- Adjust for low light:
- Enhances the quality and brightness of the video in low light conditions.
- Always display participant names on their video:
- You will always see the participant’s name displayed on their video.
- Turn off my video when joining a meeting:
- When you join a meeting, your video will automatically be disabled.
- When you join a video meeting, you should always see the video preview.
- Hide non-video participants:
- If a participant does not have video enabled, hide their thumbnails. Instead, show their names as thumbnails.
- See myself as the active speaker while speaking:
- Your own screen should be the primary active speaker when you speak so your video should be the primary active speaker.
- Depending on your device, you can display either 25 or 49 participants per screen in Gallery View.
- Advanced:
- Here you can view more advanced settings for your video.
Audio
Your microphone and speaker should be set up, tested, whose volume should be adjusted, and other settings adjusted as well.
- Speaker:
- Play a test tone by clicking Test Speaker. Zoom will now use the speaker you selected from the drop-down menu.
- Use separate audio device to play ringtone simultaneously:
- If you receive a Zoom Phone call or an invitation to a Zoom meeting, choose another device to play the ringtone. Besides the speaker you selected to ring, the ringtone of this other device will also ring simultaneously.
- Microphone:
- To record and listen to your recording, click the Test Mic button. Zoom will ask you to select the mic you want to use from the drop-down box.
- Automatically adjust microphone:
- If the volume levels of the microphone are too loud or too soft, you can automatically adjust the volume settings so that others can hear you more clearly. There is a possibility that you may want to turn off this setting if you are experiencing issues with your audio playing in and out.
- Suppress background noise:
- There are four levels of background noise suppression: Auto, Low, Medium, and High.
- The in-meeting option for “Turn On Original Sound” has been added: This will add a button in the meeting for enabling original sound.
- High fidelity music mode:
- The Zoom audio will be optimized to deliver the best possible audio. A 48kHz sampling rate is utilized, CELT codec is enabled, and bit rates for mono and stereo are increased respectively to 96Kbps and 196Kbps. A wired connection is strongly recommended for this as it can increase CPU usage and consume more bandwidth.
- Echo cancellation:
- Uncheck this to disable Zoom echo cancellation. We strongly recommend using a high quality headset and microphone for this option.
- Stereo audio:
- If your microphone can process audio in stereo, it sends audio in stereo during meetings and webinars.
- Ringtones:
- Zoom Phone calls and meeting invitations can be ringtoned. Zoom Phone calls and meeting invitations are not synchronized with the Zoom Mobile apps.
- Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting:
- Instead of prompting users to join, automatically join meetings with computer audio.
- Mute my microphone when joining a meeting
- Do not prompt joining audio when I join a meeting using 3rd party audio
- Press and hold SPACE key to temporarily unmute yourself:
- You can unmute yourself if you’re muted by holding down the SPACE key.
- Sync buttons on headset:
- In this application, you will be able to sync your audio device’s mute/mute function with your Zoom desktop application. As a result, if you mute or unmute your microphone via the audio device, your selected microphone will be shown muted or unmuted by the Zoom client. Ensure you are using an audio device that supports this setting.
- Advanced:
- Click here for more information regarding advanced audio settings.
Share Screen
Screen sharing settings can be changed.
- When screen sharing, you can choose whether the meeting window should be a full screen, maximized, or maintained at its current size.
- If you prefer not to use the Aero mode, turn it off during the screening process.
- Scale to fit shared content to Zoom window:
- Adapt the screen size to fit the Zoom window as soon as the screen is shared.
- When I am screen sharing, I want to display my Zoom window to other participants: Display your Zoom window to other participants when you are sharing your screen. When you share your screen, the Zoom client will by default be hidden. If you wish the Zoom windows to appear while screen sharing, you need to enable the Show zoom windows during screen sharing option in the Settings section of the web portal before you can see them in the client.
- Enable the remote control of all applications:
- In a remote control session, other participants should be able to control all the applications remotely as well.
- Side-by-side mode:
- Share the screen with the other participants and show their videos simultaneously.
- Silence system notifications when sharing desktop:
- To avoid interruptions and distractions during presentations, temporarily disable all notifications.
- Share applications:
- Share an individual window:
- All you have to do is to share the window of the application you have chosen.
- Share all windows from an application:
- Make sure all window openings are shared.
- When I share my screen in a meeting:
- It is a good idea to select the default sharing behavior.
- Automatically share the desktop.
- Show all sharing options
- When I share directly to a Zoom Room:
- When you share to a Zoom Room, you can select the default behavior.
- Automatically share desktop
- Show all sharing options
- Advanced:
- You can view advanced screen sharing settings by clicking on the Advanced tab.
Phone
Shows Zoom Phone license information if you have one.
Chat
Zoom chat, channel, and message notification settings can be changed.
Chat Settings
- Show Audio Message button:
- You can record and send voice messages by clicking the Voice Message button on the role management permission to Zoom chat box.
- Show Code Snippet button:
- Allow you to send code snippets from the chat box by displaying the code snippet button.
- Include link preview:
- Every time you include a link in your message, include a preview image, description, and page title.
- Change my status to “Away” when I am inactive for ___ minutes:
- When you have been inactive for the specified number of minutes, change your status to Away.
- Left sidebar theme:
- The chat sidebar will be changed to a darker color.
- Blocked users:
- View and remove blocked contacts by clicking Manage blocked users.
Unread Messages
- Keep all unread messages on top:
- The top of the list of your chats should be the ones with unread messages.
- Show unread message badge for channels:
- Display a badge beside each chat indicating how many messages are unread.
- Move messages with new replies to the bottom of the chat
- When viewing unread messages in a channel:
- Start at the first unread
- Start at the latest
Push Notifications
- You will receive notifications if you choose to receive them for the following:
- All messages
- Only private messages and mentions:
- Whenever someone uses @(your name) in a group chat or one on one chat (private 1-on-1 chat), you will have a notification.
- Nothing
- With exceptions for:
- In case you would like to set up notification settings that differ from those set up above for particular channels, exceptions can be created.
- Receive notifications for:
- Set your keyword for notification.
- I want to receive an email notification when a message I am following has a new reply.
- Do not disturb from __ to __:
- Select the period during which notifications shouldn’t be received.
- Play sound when I receive a new message:
- New messages are accompanied by an audio notification
- Mute notifications while I am in a meeting or internal call:
- While in a Zoom meeting or internal call, notifications will be temporarily disabled.
- Show notification banner on screen until dismissed
- Show message preview (uncheck this option for privacy):
- Desktop notifications partially show message contents
Zoom Apps
- Zoom Apps Local App Data & Cookies:
- You can clear Zoom Apps’ local data and cookies by deleting the app from your device. To clear Zoom Apps’ local data and cookies, click the Clear button.
Background & Filters
Choosing a virtual background is as easy as choosing a color (green screen) and uploading an image to be your virtual background. In addition, you can enhance the appearance of your video with video filters or studio effects.
Recording
You can also view how much cloud recording space you have and how much you’re using when you select a location for your local recordings.
- Store my recording at:
- Choose the location where recordings will be saved by default.
Note: - By default, you should set the default recording location as a cloud syncing folder (like Dropbox, Google Drive, or One Drive), an external drive, or network storage device. However, doing so may cause you to experience difficulties saving and converting the recording locally. It is strongly recommended that recordings be stored on a local drive instead of Zoom’s default location.
- Choose a location for recorded files when the meeting ends:
- A prompt should appear at the end of a recorded meeting asking where the recording files should be saved. By default, the recording files will be saved in the default location if this option is not enabled.
- Each participant’s audio will be recorded separately:
- Instead of a single audio file with all the audio from participants, separate audio files are created for each participant.
- Optimize for 3rd party video editor:
- Recording files must be compatible with video editors.
- Add a timestamp to the recording:
- When recording the meeting, include the date and time.
- Record video during screen sharing:
- Ensure that participants’ video is recorded during screen share sessions.
- Place video next to the shared screen in the recording:
- If you record locally during a screen-sharing session, you will need to put the local recording side-by-side with the local recording of the participant’s video and shared screen.
- Keep temporary recording files:
- Zoom can troubleshoot recording problems by using the original files
Profile
- Edit My Profile:
- You can change your profile picture and name by logging into the Zoom web portal.
- View My Subscription:
- You can change your current paid plan by accessing the Zoom web portal.
- View Advanced Features:
- You can access settings not available in the Zoom client via the Zoom web portal.
Statistics
Right now, Zoom uses how much CPU and memory. You will also see data such as latency and jitter if you are participating in a meeting. This will allow you to evaluate the quality of your audio and video. You can submit problem reports with a log to Zoom Support if you are having problems with the Zoom desktop client.

macOS
To access Zoom client settings, follow these steps:
- Open the Zoom desktop app, then sign in to it.
- After clicking your profile picture, you will be taken to your settings page.
- You will have access to the following options when you click on your profile picture:
General
options for starting and joining meetings will appear when you click on your profile picture.
- Use dual monitors:
- When participating in a meeting, use separate screens for video and screen sharing content.

Video
settings include viewing your video feed and changing your camera settings.
Camera
- Camera:
- You can choose which camera to use for Zoom.
- The camera settings are as follows: you can choose either Original Ratio (usually a 4:3 aspect ratio) or HD (usually a 16:9 aspect ratio), and, if you select Mirror my Video, the video will be horizontally flipped.
My Video
- Touch up my appearance:
- To minimize the visibility of imperfections on the skin, apply a softening effect.
- Adjust for low light:
- The video is brighter and quality is improved in low light environments.
- Select from Auto (which is selected by default) or Manual. Manual gives you the option to adjust the brightness of the video by sliding up and down the slider.
- Always display participant name on their videos:
- The name of the participant is displayed on the video.
- Stop my video when joining a meeting:
- When you join a meeting, your video is automatically disabled.
- Always show video preview dialog when joining a video meeting
- Hide non-video participants:
- Do not show their thumbnails if they do not have video enabled. Their names will appear in the thumbnails.
- See myself as the active speaker while speaking:
- It is recommended that you make your video the primary active speaker on your own screen when you are speaking.
- Maximum participants displayed per screen in Gallery View:
The amount of participants displayed on your device may range from 25 to 49. - Advanced:
- You can view advanced video settings on your device
Audio
Adjust the volume of your speakers and microphone, test them, and make any other adjustments you wish.
- Speaker:
- Play a tone to test your speakers. Zoom will use the speaker you select from the drop-down menu.
- Use separate audio device to play ringtone simultaneously:
- Whenever you are invited to a Zoom meeting or receive a Zoom Phone call, choose another device that will play the ringtone. Your selected speaker will ring at the same time.
- Microphone:
- Playback audio recorded with the microphone by clicking the button. Zoom lets you choose the microphone.
- Automatically adjust microphone:
- In order to normalize volume, your microphone will automatically soften or louden as necessary in order to make it easier for other participants to hear you. In case you are experiencing problems with the fade in and out of your audio, you may wish to disable this setting.
- Suppress background noise:
- Set the level of background noise suppression to Auto, Low, Medium, or High.
- Show in-meeting option to “Turn on Original Sound” from microphone:
- This button enables original sound during meetings.
- High fidelity music mode:
- Zoom audio is optimized for optimum sound quality. With the 96 Kbps mono and 196 Kbps stereo bit rates, sampling rate increases to 48 KHz, CELT codec is enabled, and sample rates are increased accordingly. In this case, a wired connection is strongly recommended because it can increase CPU usage and use more bandwidth.
- Echo cancellation:
- Turns off zoom algorithms that cancel out echo. This option is strongly recommended to be used with a headset with a high quality microphone.
- Stereo audio:
- If your microphone is capable of processing stereo audio, you can send audio during your meetings and webinars in stereo.
- Ringtones:
- Zoom Phone calls and meeting invites can be ringtoned. Ringtones are not synced to the Zoom app.
- Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting:
- Instead of displaying a prompt, automatically join meetings with computer audio.

- Do not prompt joining audio when I join a meeting using 3rd party audio
- Press and hold ‘Space key’ to temporarily unmute yourself:
- Holding the SPACE bar while muted allows you to unmute yourself.
- Sync buttons on headset:
- This feature synchronizes mute/mute settings between your audio device and Zoom. The Zoom client will show your microphone is muted or unmuted if you mute or unmute using a button on your audio device. Ensure your audio device is supported before enabling this feature.
- Advanced:
- Access advanced audio settings.
Share Screen
allows you to make changes to the screen sharing settings.
- Window size when screen sharing:
- When viewing shared content, you can choose whether the meeting window should display in fullscreen mode, maximized or maintained at its current size.
- Scale to fit shared content to Zoom window:
- Automatically scale the shared screen to fit the size of the Zoom window.
- My Zoom window is visible to other participants when I am screen sharing: Share your screen with other participants and the Zoom client will be displayed. This is by default. On the Settings page in the web portal, you must enable the option Show Zoom windows during screen share before this will appear in the client.
- Side-by-side mode:
- Displays the participants’ video alongside the shared screen.
- Silence system notifications when sharing desktop:
- Turn off all notifications during presentations to prevent interruptions and distractions.
- Share applications:
- Share an individual window:
- Choose a window that you want to share.
- Share all windows from an application:
- All of the windows in the application will be shared.
- When I share my screen in a meeting:
- Make sure that you are choosing the default behavior for sharing your screen.

Phone
If you own a Zoom Phone license, it displays information about Zoom Phone.
Chat
You can change Zoom chat, channel, and message settings here.
Chat Settings

Zoom Apps
- Zoom Apps Local App Data & Cookies:
- You may be able to clear the data and cookies stored on your device by some Zoom Apps, which can be found on the Zoom Apps page. To clear all the data and cookies currently stored by Zoom Apps, simply click Clear.
Background & Filters
A virtual background can be selected, as can the color of the background (green screen) behind you, as well as the image to be used as the virtual background. Also, you can enhance your video appearance with video filters or studio effects.
Recording
View how much cloud recording space you have and how much is used for your local recordings and view how much is left for your local recordings.
Local Recording

- Whenever a recording of a meeting ends, a prompt will appear asking where the recording files are stored. This possibility can be disabled to prevent recording files from being saved in the default location if this is not enabled.
- Record a separate audio file for each participant:
- Instead of a single audio file including all of the participants’ audio, separate audio files are created for each participant.
- Optimize for a 3rd party video editor:
- Recording files should be compatible with video editors.
- Add a timestamp to the recording:
- Record the meeting at the right time and date.
- Record video during screen sharing:
- Keep a video recording of participants during screen sharing sessions.
- Place video next to the shared screen in the recording:
- Place the participants’ video and shared screens side-by-side in recordings made during screen-sharing sessions.
- Keep temporary recording files:
- Keep the original files to help Zoom troubleshoot when there is a problem with the recording
Cloud Recording
Select Manage on web… for access to Zoom’s web portal and to adjust cloud recording settings.
Profile
- Edit My Profile:
- Change your profile picture and name on the Zoom web portal by opening the Zoom web portal.
- View My Subscription:
- You can change your paid plan on the Zoom web portal.
- View Advanced Features:
- Zoom’s web portal allows you to adjust settings that are not available through the client.
- Devices List:
- This page displays all the devices that are linked to your Zoom account.
- Sign Me Out Of All Devices
Statistics
Zoom’s CPU and memory usage is displayed. When you are in a meeting, you can evaluate your audio and video quality based on data like latency and jitter. You can also contact Zoom Support if you’re having problems with the Zoom desktop client.

Setting up the microphone and speaker, testing them, adjusting their volume, and tweaking other settings is everything you need to do.
- Speaker:
- Play a test tone by clicking Test Speaker. Zoom will now use the selected speaker from the drop-down menu.
- Microphone:
- To record and play back audio, click Test Mic. Select the microphone you want to use by clicking the dropdown menu.
- Automatically adjust microphone:
- You can automatically adjust the volume of your microphone softly or loudly based on the need in order to adjust the volume and make it easier for others to hear you. You may want to turn off this setting if you are experiencing issues with your audio fading in and out while you are streaming.
- Suppress background noise:
- There are three levels available: Auto, Low, and Medium.
- Ringtones:
- Zoom Phone and meeting invitations can be ringtoned. These settings are not synchronized with the mobile app.

Local Recording

- Choose a location to save the recordings after the meeting ends:

- Record a separate audio file for each participant:
- Instead of creating one audio file containing the audio of all participants, separate audio files are created for each participant.
- Optimize for 3rd party video editor:
- Check that the recording format is compatible with the software you intend to use for editing.
- Record video during screen sharing:
- Keep recording the screen share participants’ video during the whole session.
- Add a timestamp to the recording:
- Record the meeting with the dates and times embedded into the recordings.
Cloud Recording
Open Zoom’s web portal by clicking the Manage button and make any necessary adjustments to cloud recording settings.
Profile
- Edit My Profile:
- You can change your profile picture and name on the Zoom web portal.
- View My Subscription:
- It displays your current paid plan and the option to change it on the Zoom web portal.
- View Advanced Features:
- You can adjust settings that are not available in the Zoom client.
Statistics
Zoom’s memory and CPU usage is displayed. You will be able to see information such as latency and jitter during a meeting, which can be helpful for assessing your video and audio quality. Zoom Support can also be contacted if you are experiencing problems with the Zoom desktop client.

You can send Zoom feedback, including ideas, requests, or general comments.

- Displays the status of the current user based on whether he/she is Basic, Licensed, or On-Premise

- This section displays any licenses that have been assigned to the user, such as Large Meeting or Webinar
- User Fingerprint ID:
- The Zoom app can be accessed using Android Fingerprint Authentication. A fingerprint scanner must be available on the device.
- Sign Out
Meeting
- Auto-Connect to Audio:
- Using the available options, connect to the audio automatically.
- Mute My Microphone:
- Every time I join a meeting, I always muffle my microphone.
- Use Original Audio:
- You can enable the original sound in the meeting by clicking the button.
- Turn Off My Video:
- If you are joining a meeting, you should always turn off your video. After joining the meeting, your video will be available.
- Touch Up My Appearance:
- Use this feature to improve your appearance by smoothing skin tones.
- Keep Virtual Background For:
- It is possible to choose whether the virtual background will be used for all meetings or only for the currently seated meeting. Virtual Background can be enabled only once per meeting if you choose Current Meeting Only.
- Aspect Ratio:
- View participants’ videos in various aspect ratios. Your own video is not affected by this setting.
- Scale to fit:
- Your phone’s screen is scaled to fit all participants’ video, so video is cropped.
- Original ratio:
- The original aspect ratio of participants’ videos will be displayed. The video will have the same aspect ratio as that of what is displayed in the desktop client, which is called the aspect ratio of the video.
- HD Video:
- Your camera’s built-in HD video can be sent to Zoom’s app. However, the overall video quality varies. –
- Mirror My Video:
- The video is horizontally flipped. You can use this option when your camera automatically flips the video when you record it.
- Show Video Preview:
- Whenever you join a video meeting, show the video preview dialog.
- Always Show Meeting Controls:
- If this option is selected, you will always be able to see the meeting controls during the meeting. As soon as the controls are disabled, they will disappear after a short period of time and won’t appear again until the screen is tapped.
- Show Non-Video Participants:
- If a participant does not have video enabled, the avatar will be displayed. When a participant does not have video enabled, the participant’s name appears as a thumbnail.
- Show Name when Participants Join
- Auto-Copy Invite Link
- Show profile photos next to in-meeting chat messages
- Closed Captioning:
- When closed captions are available, Zoom will display them.
- Show My Connected Time:
- This displays the total amount of time you have spent connected to the meeting.
- Safe Driving Mode:
- Safe driving mode can be accessed by swiping right while in a meeting. Your screen will be dark and you won’t be able to see anyone.
- Reaction Skin Tone:
- If you use chat emoticons or meet reactions, choose the default tone.
Contacts
- Phone Contacts Matching:
- It will automatically find and add your phone contacts that have a Zoom account to your Zoom contacts directory when they also have a Zoom account.
- Contact Requests:
- Send and receive requests to get in touch.
Chat
- Include Link Preview:
- When your message contains a link, include a preview image, title, and description.
- Receive Notifications For:
- All messages
- Only private messages and mentions:
- It will display notifications when you are in a private 1-on-1 chat and when someone mentions your name (@) in a group chat (group chat).

- Each participant’s video will be displayed in its original aspect ratio. Quite simply, in our desktop client, the aspect ratio displayed on their video will match the aspect ratio displayed on our web client.
- HD Video:
- Utilizing the Zoom app, you can send HD videos from your camera. Other factors determine the overall video quality.
- Mirror My Video:
- Rotate the video horizontally. You can use this option if your camera automatically flips your video.
- Show Video Preview:
- When joining a video meeting, always display the video preview dialog.
- Always Show Meeting Controls:
- If this option is selected, meeting controls will always be visible during the meeting. After a few seconds, disabled controls will disappear and the user will have to tap the screen to bring them back.
- Show Closed Captioning (when available):
- Whenever possible, captions will be displayed.
- Show My Connected Time:
- A timer will show how long you have been in the meeting.
- Show Names when Participants join

- Display the avatars of participants without video. Their names will appear under the thumbnail.

- Blur snapshot on task switcher:
- Use of the task switcher blurs the Zoom app’s preview. If you want to hide sensitive information, use this setting.

- Easily integrate Zoom with the contact list and lock screen of your phone. From the lock screen, you will be able to receive calls and make calls through Zoom from your contact list.
- Ringtones:
- Upon receiving an incoming meeting invite or a Zoom Phone call, you can choose a ringtone for it. Please note that this setting is independent of the similar setting in the desktop client.
