Configure Layouts for Cisco MPP Devices in Control Hub- Webex
The Webex Calling Control Hub site has received improved MPP Device Management capabilities as a result of the recent addition of the Configure Layouts capability.
Using the existing Configure Lines capability and the User’s Monitoring list functionality, an Administrator is able to personalize a User’s Programmable Line Keys (PLK) on the phone as well as on any Key Expansion Modules (KEM) that are attached to the phone.
Setting the principal and shared line appearances (PLK Only), monitoring lines (PLK & KEM), and speed dials (PLK & KEM) are some of the choices for the layout that are available on MPP devices.
The ability to apply Layouts in bulk (Templates) to a large number of MPP devices is currently being worked on and will be available by the end of the year.
Configure a Layout on User’s Phone
Requirements to Meet Before Using Either the Default or Custom Layout Modes
Only available on Cisco phones with the Multiplatform (MPP) firmware, which includes the Cisco 6800, 7800, and 8800 Series.
Only supported on Cisco Key Expansion Modules (KEM), which are compatible with Cisco MPP 6800 and 8800 Series.
Utilizing the option known as “Configure Lines,” the user can set up both their primary and shared lines on their phone.
The User’s Monitoring List is updated to include monitoring users and/or call park extensions as appropriate.
Known problems and possible solutions
It is possible that the current monitor or speed dial values on the phone will not be removed when using the Custom Layout mode and changing an existing Monitor or Speed Dial assignment to open or switching the layout mode back to the default setting. As a consequence of this, the layout that is displayed in Control Hub does not correspond with what is displayed on the phone. It is possible that the old monitor entries on the phone could produce a conflict on the phone, which would then result in a blank line key and an amber LED that was flickering rapidly. Make use of one of the workarounds that are provided below in order to fix the problem.
Stale monitors and speed dial line keys are being deleted by the administrator.
Stale monitor or speed dial line keys can be remotely cleared from the configure layout screen by momentarily switching the line key entries to the primary line option, saving the entries, and then applying the changes. This process can be repeated as many times as necessary. After the phone has been updated, you will have the choice to choose the line keys you want to use to clear the keys to utilize the open option.
User of a phone device cleaning stale monitor or speed dial line keys manually
A phone provisioning administrator ought to be consulted before attempting to implement this workaround. On the phone, inactive items in the Monitor or Speed Dial can be removed by holding down the line key for several seconds, followed by the selection of the None option from the available menu choices.
This workaround is inapplicable to the process of removing the call park extension.
The Call Park Extensions are included on the monitoring list.
If a user’s monitoring list contains call park extensions, it is advised that the call park extensions be placed at the end of the monitoring list, and the layouts should only contain enough monitoring positions to accommodate the user’s portion of the monitoring list. If a user’s monitoring list does not include call park extensions, it is recommended that the user delete the call park extensions from their monitoring list.
For instance, if a user’s configured monitoring list includes four user entries and four call park locations, the administrator ought to design a layout with only four monitoring positions and at least four open keys. This is because the list is too long to fit on a single screen. Because of this, the user monitoring entries can be used to fill the layout monitoring line keys, while the call park locations can be used to fill the open line keys.
Switching between the 14 button and 18 button KEM styles will not save the setup when the Add KEM mode is active.
If you do nothing in the screen where you configure layouts, the phone will automatically utilize the default layout, which applies the following logic:
Default Layout
- The principal owner of the phone is always the key that is located in the first line, which is the top left PLK.
- Beginning with the second PLK and moving clockwise around the PLK, the remaining PLKs are populated in the following order (from left to right, top to bottom):
- Any additional primary and shared lines that are given in the configure lines section are applied. This includes both main and shared lines.
- Any monitoring list entries, working from the top down, are applied to any empty PLKs that are still present.
- If one or more KEMs are connected to the device, then any extra monitoring entries will overflow to the first available KEM key, beginning on the top-left and moving all the way down to the bottom-right, as well as from KEM Page-1 to Page-2 and so on.
- When you are working in the default layout, the only view that is accessible to you is the preview layout.
- At this time, KEM keys do not provide primary or shared lines of communication.
- Open PLK and KEM keys are believed to be any keys on the keyboard that are not automatically supplied by the layout.
Custom Layout
Preview Layout Mode
The preview mode allows you to see how the layout appears when you apply to the device. The preview helps to verify the layout based on the line keys, monitoring lines, and speed dials that you populate.

Custom Layout
Make changes to the PLK layout in your device by using the custom layout. Using the drop-down list that is provided for each PLK, as an administrator, you have the ability to define the following changes to the PLK layout.
The portal will notify you in order to assist you in customizing your phone layout if the amounts displayed on the shared line list of the device or on your monitoring list do not correspond to your active layout. The notifications are referred to as Advisories and can be found directly above the layout area. Advisories are merely messages that provide you with further information; they do not prohibit you from saving the layout that you have created. Clearing warnings can be accomplished in one of two ways: either by increasing the number of PLK positions in your layout that are of the required kind, or by reducing the number of entries in either the device’s shared line list or the user’s Monitoring list.
Functional Options
Choose the desired option from the drop-down menus, and then set the PLK values according to the requirements.
- You can switch PLK positions by dragging between the many available locations.
- Make your monitoring and speed dial entry configurations by selecting the Add KEM option (provided that the MPP model offers this option).
- You have the option to save your changes to the Layout or to cancel them.
- To apply the changes and transfer the new Layout to the device, select “Apply Changes” from the “Device Edit” section of the “Actions Menu.”
PLK Configurable Options
-
Open – No value specified.
- Except for the first-line appearance, which is known as the Dedicated Primary Line, the Primary line option is the one that is selected automatically for all PLKs.
- The Open PLK spots are filled up by the overflow that comes from the Monitoring list.
- You have the option in the phone to manually supply a Speed Dial on any Open PLKs.
-
Primary Line – Set the PLK as a primary line.
-
- Because it is the Primary Line, the default value for the first PLK cannot be changed in any way.
- It is not possible to move the primary line appearance found in the initial PLK to any other location.
- When a prime line is set, any extended line key functions, such as Monitoring or Speed Dial values, that may already be present in a PLK as a result of a prior setup are removed.
Shared Line – Designate a PLK as a Shared Line.
- Shared Line Appearance (SLA) positions have their contents determined by the values that are set in configure lines.
- PLK places in the layout are populated with SLAs, moving from top left to bottom right.
- A warning will appear if the number of SLA in the configure lines list is greater than the number of shared line positions that are available in the Layout.
-
Speed Dial – You can make one of your PLKs become a speed dial. Both the Name and the Destination fields must be filled out.
-
- Entries for Speed Dial are required to have a name and a destination extension, telephone number, or SIP URI (for example: example@webex.com).
All SIP URI destinations are not routable. - On the device, you are unable to customize the Speed Dials that are defined in the layouts.
- PLKs, or speed dials, can be found on both phones and keypad entry machines (KEMs).
- Entries for Speed Dial are required to have a name and a destination extension, telephone number, or SIP URI (for example: example@webex.com).
Monitoring – Designate a PLK as a Monitoring line.
- The values that are displayed in the monitoring list are used to populate the monitoring (BLF) positions.
- The designated Monitoring PLKs are populated with monitoring entries first, then the Open PLKs are populated.
- If the number of monitoring entries in your monitoring list is greater than the number of monitoring slots that are now accessible in the Layout, a warning will appear.
Configure lines for a Key Expansion Module (KEM)
Before you begin
- KEMs are compatible with phones of the Cisco 6800 and 8800 series.
- KEMs are shown in two rows of 14 lines each and have a total of three pages that can be navigated.
- If you select Custom Layout, you will be able to reset the KEM layout, with the exception of the first-line key, which always defaults to primary and cannot be edited.
- Go to the Users section by going to the customer view at https://admin.webex.com.
- Find and choose the line keys for the user whose configuration you wish to edit.
- Click Devices.
- Choose the device that you want to setup and click Next.
- Simply navigate to Manage > Configure Layouts.
- You have the option of assigning the line key assignments to either monitored lines or speed dials.
Monitor lines setup all of the available lines in the appropriate order after first filling in the designated monitor line slots in the line key configuration and then moving on to the KEM keys configuration. - Simply hitting the Remove All button will cause all existing KEM key configurations to be deleted.
- Click Save.
