Emergency calling support in Skype for the United States

You can now call 911 using Skype in the United States if you need an emergency.

During a 911 emergency call, you can also enable the sharing of your location with emergency operators in the event that Skype automatically captures your location and shares it with them when you make the call. If you choose to dial 911, you will only be required to share your location information with your local emergency operator in order to route your call and provide location information to your local emergency operator.

There is a possibility that your location will not be automatically shared with the emergency services operator if you are using a device that does not support APIs for location sharing, or if you are in a location that does not support location sharing.

It is possible to enable location sharing for 911 emergencies by following the steps below:

  1. The profile picture can be selected in Skype.
  2. Select Privacy from the Settings menu.
  3. Location sharing for 911 emergencies should be turned on. The special 911 warning of limitations and unavailability must also be acknowledged. Your address will not be shared with 911 if an emergency occurs when you disable 911 emergency location sharing.
Note: It is also possible that you will need to enable location sharing on your device from the settings. There are different ways in which different devices manage their settings. It may be necessary to check the manufacturer’s website if you are not sure how to check the settings on your device.
