Express yourself in a meeting in Microsoft Teams
The ability to raise your hand virtually is not the only thing that is possible in a Teams meeting, but there are other things you can do to promote inclusivity, engagement, and fun by using other ways to express yourself.
Desktop
There are controls within the upper-right corner of the screen that allow you to alter the type of meeting you’re attending. These controls include buttons that allow you to select Reactions, which enables you to respond to the information that is presented during the meeting. The following live reactions are available for you to choose from:
- Like
- Love
- Applause
- Laugh
- Surprise
The result of any reaction you make to a meeting will also be shown in a pop-up message below the meeting at the bottom once you have reacted to the meeting, and you will be able to see the result of your reaction immediately afterwards. There is also a notification of this in the upper left corner of your profile picture, or on the video feed, as well as on your profile picture.
If you share a multimedia piece with someone during a meeting, such as a desktop, window, PowerPoint deck, photo, video, or whiteboard, there will be a temporary float of reaction appearing on the bottom of the screen for a few seconds after the other participant has shared a media piece during the meeting. This could include desktop, window, video, or whiteboard. The participants who have sent reactions for each other’s profiles also have their corresponding reactions displayed there as well.
Notes:
Mobile
Using live reactions on an iOS or Android mobile device
You are able to view meeting reactions (or raise your hand) regardless of whether you are in a meeting by tapping More information on the Meeting controls along the edge of the screen. If you are not in a meeting, you can tap More information after you tap the Meeting controls along the edge to view the meeting reactions (or raise your hand). In order to be able to share your thoughts, you need to click on Live reactions.
Following the selection of your type of live reaction, you will have the chance to select how you would like to express it. When the reaction is triggered, the reaction will be displayed in your live video feed, and when you turn off your camera and turn on your profile picture, the reaction will be displayed in your profile picture as well.

Using live reactions on an iPad or Android tablet
When you use an iPad or an Android tablet to participate in a Teams meeting, you will be able to share your reaction (or raise your hand) in real-time by clicking on the Reactions icon in the meeting controls along the edge of the screen. By clicking this icon, you will also see what reactions others are sharing in real-time.
If you’re watching your live video feed, and you see live reactions appear, all you’re required to do is click on the reaction you’d like to express and it will be shown to you. The reaction will appear across your profile picture for a short time if you are not using your camera.
In the event that you or another meeting member, including a presenter, share content in the meeting, such as a screen show, PowerPoint slide deck, photo, video, or other visual piece, you will see live reactions float up from the bottom of the screen when you share the content with the group.
