How do I set Skype up on my speaker?
Two users can share the same speaker. Upon completion, sign out of your account and re-enter the account information for the second user.
In order to use Cortana, you must first install the app on your PC or mobile device. You can find instructions on how to do this in your device’s manual. Use the same account as Skype. After completing these steps, you can set up Skype.
- Cortana will automatically log you into your Skype account with the same account you use to sign into the speaker.
- As part of the Skype setup, you will be asked if you would like your Skype contacts synced to Cortana so that you can call with Skype.

Who can I call from my speaker?
- Your Skype contacts: people you’ve connected with on Skype, or phone numbers you’ve saved as contacts in Skype.
- Your phone contacts: Your phone’s address book contains the people and numbers you have saved. To call these contacts, you must give Cortana permission to sync your phone contacts. We are offering a limited time promotion that allows free calling to certain destinations for the duration of this promotion. It generally requires Skype Credits or Subscriptions to make this type of call, however.
- Phone numbers: If you recite a phone number, Cortana will call it. Our limited time promotion allows free calls to certain destinations, but Skype Credit or Subscription is usually required for this type of call.
- Local Places: Call any local business with Cortana. Cortana can call a place by name, or you can look it up and ask her to do so. This type of call normally requires Skype Credit or Subscription, but we are offering a limited time promotion that allows free calls to certain destinations.
How do I call international numbers?
Saved international numbers can be called by name just like domestic contacts. Two ways are available to call an international number that you haven’t saved:
- Start the phone number with “+” (“plus”) – i.e. “Hey Cortana, call +44 …”
- Start the phone number with “011” – i.e. “Hey Cortana, call 011 44 …”
Can I use the speaker to accept incoming calls from mobile phones and landlines?

You can sync your contacts from your phone to the cloud by adding them on your phone and then opening the Cortana app. Your speaker will then be able to make calls to those contacts. Learn more.
My speaker is in a family room. What account should I use to set up the speaker and Skype?
You can set up a Skype call with your speaker and ask Cortana a question from anywhere in the room. You can also access contacts you’ve enabled through your speaker, along with displaying incoming caller ID. You have two options when signing into your speaker:
- Sign into the speaker with your personal account: The information and functionality you have with Cortana will be accessible to anyone in the room, including any Skype calls you make (inbound or outbound). Cortana and Skype are now able to provide a more personalized experience.
- Create a new account for your family to sign into the speaker: In order to use Cortana and Skype on the speaker, you will need to create a new account that is tied to your family’s information and contacts. If you want to make calls from the speaker, you’ll need to re-add contacts with that account (refer to How do I add more contacts?). Compared to a personalized experience, this is a more shared one.

Can I call Skype groups on my speaker?
Currently, the speaker cannot make outbound calls to groups. You can pick up a call if your speaker rings and you are a member of a group that calls you.
What happens when I ask for Cortana in a call?
Remote users will hear what you ask Cortana, but not Cortana’s reply, when you ask Cortana in a call. You are the only one who decides what you want to share with the remote user. We do this to protect your privacy.
Does Cortana listen to my calls?
When you say “Hey Cortana,” Cortana is activated. No recording or information is sent until you say these words. In addition, while you are on a call together, Cortana will not be able to be activated on your speaker.
Can I interact with contacts that use Interactive voice response (IVR) (e.g. “Press 1 to continue”)?
During a call, you are not able to interact with IVR systems by pressing letters or numbers. Future support for this feature is being considered by the Skype team.

Ensure that your speaker volume is not muted and that it is sufficiently loud for you to hear what the speaker is saying. The volume can be adjusted on the screen by choosing the loudspeaker icon located at the bottom-right corner of the screen. It is for the system’s default playback device that the volume slider control is located.
