How to Archive or restore a team in Microsoft Teams
Desktop And Web
When a team is no longer active, but you want it to stay around for reference or to reactivate in the future, you can archive it in order to keep it around. As soon as you archive the team, you will no longer be able to access the conversations or files within it. Nevertheless, you can still find all the items you need on the website – you may even be able to save it as a favorite if you want to do that. Archiving and restoring a team can only be done by a team owner.
Archive a team
- Your teams are listed on the left side of the screen, and you can click on them to get a more detailed view of your team.
- On the list of options, you will find an option called Manage at the bottom.
- The More options icon under the Active list will allow you to select the archive team option under the Active list. Once you have selected the team name under the Active list to archive, you will be able to click on the OK button in order to achieve the archive.
- To prevent others from being able to edit the content in the SharePoint site that is associated with the team, as well as the Wiki tab associated with the team, you need to choose the Make the SharePoint site read-only for team members option. Please note that the team owner will still be able to access the content of the Wiki tab and the SharePoint site associated with the team.
In order to view and search a team that has been archived, simply select the team name in the Archived list, or if you think you may want to refer to it frequently, you can add the team to a favorite. You can do this by selecting the team in the list, and choosing More options Favorites.
When a team is archived, all the activity associated with that team is frozen. No new posts can be started in a channel, nor can replies be sent back to posts in the same channel. It is not possible to add or remove new channels, change team settings, upload apps, or start new conversations in a channel. If you have access to the admin panel, you can still add members, remove members, update roles, as well as delete, renew, or restore an archived team as long as you are logged in as the team owner.
Restore a team
The following steps will guide you through the process of restoring an archived team. Whenever you locate the name of the team that you want to archive, select More options and then click on Restore team in the Restore Team window, and then click on that team’s name that appears in the archive list.
Mobile
If you want to archive or restore a team for the time being, then you will need to use the Teams desktop application or the Teams on the web application if you wish to archive or restore a team. The first step you need to take to be able to view an archived team on your mobile device is to add the archived team to your favorites list within the Teams desktop app or the Teams web app. Then, it will appear in the list of favorites in your account.
