You will have conversations with your teammates within a team. These are the types of conversations that occur within a team, and can be viewed as channel conversations. Remember that each of the channels will be dedicated to a particular department, project, or focus that it has been assigned to, which is what makes them so important.
Each member of a team has the ability to create a channel by default. In a standard channel, all members have access to the channel and everything that is posted on the channel is searchable by all members. There is an option for you to create a private channel for your team if you need a smaller audience for a specific project. There are two types of channels: standard and private, and more information can be found in the Teams section.
Create a standard channel
Creating a standard channel can be done from the team list by clicking on Create Standard Channel. You can find the name of the team by selecting More options Add channel from the drop-down menu. In the Channel tab of the Manage team view, in the Manage team view, if you choose Manage team, you will be able to add channels to your team.
Over the course of the life of a team, you will have the option to create up to 200 channels. You can add new channels to that number but you can also delete them in the future.
Create a private channel
In order to ensure that sensitive data, such as budgets, resources, strategic positioning, and so on, will remain in a closed channel for your team members, creating a private channel is a great way to ensure that sensitive information can be discussed in an entirely focused manner.

There are a total of 30 private channels that can be created for each team over the course of its lifetime.
The following steps can be followed in order to create a team private channel:
- If you wish to create a private channel for a team, you need to go to that team and select the Add channel option from the More options menu.
- It is important to name your channel and give it a description.
- You need to choose Private – Specific teammates have access to the account under Privacy by clicking on the down arrow on the right.
- Adding a private channel to the team can be done by selecting the Create button.
Add members to a private channel
Private channel owners have the capability of adding or removing members, and they can edit the settings of their private channels. The first thing you need to do is make sure that everyone you add is already a team member.
In order to add team members to a private channel, you will need to do the following:
- You can add members to a private channel by selecting the More options option, just below the name of the channel.
- You can add or remove members as well as assign roles by using the Members and Settings tabs. There are no limits to the number of owners and members you can have in your private channel.
- Once you have finished the process, select Done when you are ready. The private channel can now be used by members to send private messages to one another.
Manage private channel creation
It is possible for a team owner to make members able to create channels by enabling or disabling their ability to do so. Go to the Settings tab of the team and you will be able to see and modify this option.
Edit, delete, hide, or leave a channel
In the More options field that appears next to the name of the channel, select More options. By selecting one of the options from the following menu, you will be able to edit, delete, hide, or leave the channel based on your preference.
The last thing you want to do is delete a channel because once you do so, you lose the entire history of its conversations as well. You won’t be able to access your team’s OneNote pages associated with that channel from Inside OneNote if you are on your team’s SharePoint site, but they will still be on your team’s SharePoint site.
