How to Leave or remove someone from a group chat in Microsoft Teams

Whether you stay in a group chat or leave is your decision after joining a group chat. A group chat can also be removed from.

Tip: The easiest way to leave a group is to turn off notifications or mute the chat from that group if you receive too many notifications about new messages.

Leave a group chat

You can leave a team chat by following these steps:

  1. You can view chats by selecting Chat.
  2. By finding the name of a group, you can leave it.
  3. Choose More options > Leave.

You can re-join the group if you change your mind.

Remove people from a group chat

Note: This setting must be enabled by your admin in order for members to remove one another from a group chat.

If you want to remove someone from a group chat in Teams, follow these steps:

  1. You can find the number of participants in any group chat that has three or more participants at the top of the chat.
  2. You can remove a participant by hovering over the number of participants and then the name of the participant you want to remove.
  3. The participant will be removed from chat once you click the X.

Everyone will be informed that the person has been removed through an update in the chat.

If someone is removed from a group chat, they are able to view previous conversations, but cannot send or respond to new messages.

Note: A person’s messages will remain in the group chat history if they leave or are removed from the group chat. Former participants will not be able to see any edited messages in a group chat.

IOS

The chat header can be tapped, and then Leave chat can be selected.

A person can be removed from a group chat by following these steps:

Android

Leaving a group chat is as simple as tapping on More options, Chat details, and Leave chat in the chat header.

Frequently Asked Questions

You cannot leave the team if you are the only member and the owner. In this case, you will have to delete the community. You can also leave a group chat in Teams by selecting chat to open the chat list and finally selecting the group you wish to leave.

Contact group members can be removed

Select Remove from this group next to the person’s name.

To leave groups in MS Teams:
  1. The chat list will appear when you select Chat (to open it)
  2. You can leave a group by finding its name.
  3. Select More options. > Leave.
If you want to leave a team, you can do so on your own, but you cannot be removed from an organization or an organization-wide team on your own. The only way to leave a team is by going to the desktop or web application. The team can be left at any time. The fact is that you can leave a team on your own, but you cannot leave an organization or an org-wide team on your own and only an admin is able to do that.
