Make a public team private in Desktop


In order to join a private team, you must be added to the team by the team owner.

In the team gallery, you have the option to join public teams and the members of those teams will be able to view them without the need to ask for permission from the team owner.

Change a team’s privacy status

By selecting More options Edit team when your team’s privacy settings are set to private (or vice versa), you will be able to make any changes to your team by clicking at the bottom of the menu under the team name in the left sidebar. Upon reaching the bottom of the page, please make sure that you scroll down to the bottom of the window to confirm your changes. You can select either the Public or the Private option under the Privacy tab.

Make a channel that is private for your group
  1. When you are in the team where you wish to create a private channel, you will be able to click on the More options button when you are in that team. You can add a channel by clicking on the Add Channel button.
  2. It is recommended that you name your channel and describe it in a few words.
  3. If you want to make sure your documents are accessible only to a specific group of members within your team, click on the down arrow along the top of the privacy menu on the right side so you can select Private – Accessible only to a specific group of people within your team.
  4. Once you have chosen Add, click on it.
As a first step, you need to create a private channel
It is possible to create a channel for a team by going to the team page, selecting More options, and then clicking on the Add channel button once you have logged in. Name the file and provide a description for it. Choose Private under Privacy and select a group of members within the team to whom the content will be accessible and select the down arrow. The next step is to select Next.
 
There is only one way to create a private channel, and that is to start from scratch from the very beginning, and that is the only way to create a private channel from scratch. There is however a way to make it public by adding new members.
 
The ‘Manage Teams’ option will take you to a page where you will be able to see a list of all the teams you have created. As you will notice, under the ‘type’ column of the page, you can see an icon symbolizing a padlock symbol, which signifies the team is private; if the icon indicates a globe symbol, it signifies that the team is public.
 
It is standard for team owners and team members to be able to create and add members to a private channel by default. They cannot be created by guests. This permission can be changed in your account settings so that only certain roles are able to create private channels, which you can do by going into your account settings. It is currently not possible to schedule channel meetings, and wikis, apps and bots are not supported.
