How to Use Cortana voice assistance in Teams

Microsoft Teams mobile app and Microsoft Teams displays support Cortana voice assistance for English language work accounts to simplify communication, collaboration, and meeting-related tasks. Check out Using Cortana in Microsoft Teams Meeting Rooms to learn more about using Cortana.

In the Teams mobile app, select the microphone button and say “Hey, Cortana” or select the microphone button.

The Teams mobile app now offers voice assistance for school-related tasks using your English language school account.

Note: There is currently support for Cortana voice assistance in Microsoft Teams for English language work accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and Australia. The Teams mobile app is the only app that supports English language school accounts.

Personal controls

Cortana in Teams protects your personal information. Microsoft 365’s Online Services Terms (OST) reflect the privacy, security, and compliance promises of Cortana, which delivers these voice assistance experiences.

Selecting the mic button or saying “Hey, Cortana” in the Teams mobile app will activate Cortana voice assistance. Through a setting in the Teams app, you can control whether Cortana will respond to your voice:

  1. Open the Teams app on your mobile device.
  2. Select Settings from the menu.
  3. Cortana will appear.
  4. You can activate Cortana with your voice by turning the Voice activation toggle switch on.

The Teams mobile app allows you to select a male or female voice for Cortana:

  1. Open the Teams app on your mobile device.
  2. Select Settings from the menu.
  3. Go to Cortana and select it.
  4. Choose between “Voice 1 – Feminine” and “Voice 2 – Masculine” next to Cortana Voice.

The audio device you’ve connected to Teams can also be used to control Cortana’s speaking.

A speaker icon appears in the lower-left corner of the screen by default, which indicates that Cortana will speak out loud. When you select the speaker icon, a slash will appear through it, indicating that you do not want Cortana to provide any audio output on screen.

Use Siri Shortcuts with Teams mobile

Join meetings and open Teams on iOS with Siri Shortcuts.

The Siri Shortcut for opening Teams is as follows:

  1. On your iOS device, launch the Teams app.
  2. Select Settings from the menu.
  3. You can access Cortana by selecting it.
  4. You can open Cortana in Teams by selecting the Siri Shortcut
  5. Add Siri to your contacts.

Siri gives you an option to open Cortana in Teams when you invoke it using the Siri shortcut.

The Siri Shortcut for joining your meeting is as follows:

  1. Your iOS device should now be open to Teams.
  2. Select Settings from the menu.
  3. Go to Cortana and select it.
  4. You can join my meeting by selecting Join my meeting under Siri Shortcut.
  5. Add to Siri by selecting it.

By using the Siri shortcut, you can join your meeting by invoking Siri and then saying, “Hey Siri, join my meeting.”

Calls, meetings, and classes

Ask Cortana to call Megan while you’re on the move.

Teams mobile app: 

Say “Hey Cortana, join my next meeting” or “Hey Cortana, join my next class” when you’re ready to join a meeting.

Microsoft Teams display:

In a meeting, use Cortana voice assistance to add people by name or number to a call. Using Cortana, say, “Welcome Megan.”.

Teams mobile app: 

Tell Cortana to show the quarterly review deck: “Hey, Cortana, show the quarterly review deck”.

Microsoft Teams display:

Alternatively, you can tell Cortana to go to the appendix slide in your presentation.

Teams mobile app: 

Messaging

Cortana voice assistance allows you to send messages whenever you want. Let Cortana know what Jonathan wants by saying, “Hey, Cortana”.

Microsoft Teams display:

Ask Cortana to send a message to my next meeting if you want to contact the team.

Find, search, and navigate

Teams mobile app and Microsoft Teams display also allow you to find and share files, search, and navigate.

Tell Cortana to share Jonathan’s marketing review deck.

Ask Cortana to open a previous chat with Jacob if you need help finding one.

Ask Cortana to show you your unread activities so you can see what you missed while you were gone.

  5. The Add to Siri option will appear.

Siri can be invoked using the Siri shortcut “Hey Siri, join my meeting” to join your meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Select Settings > Devices from the drop-down menu next to your profile picture in Teams. By default, Teams will use your chosen speaker and microphone.
You can do it pretty easily. Cortana can be found in the Activity or Chats sections of Teams on iOS and Android. Look at the top of the screen for the microphone icon. The microphone summons Cortana when you press it.

Activating Cortana

 

The Cortana Mic widget or Ask Cortana widget on iOS or Android devices let you get Cortana’s attention. Alternatively, you can tap the microphone icon in the app. If you’ve never used a voice assistant before, try asking simple questions like, “What time is it?” or “What temperature is it?”.
