How to Use read receipts for messages in Teams

Interested in knowing if someone has read or seen a message that you sent? Keep track of your read receipts by using read receipts. You will see a Seen confirmation next to your message when they have read it. Otherwise, you will only be able to see that your message has been sent if you click on the confirmation button.

What counts as someone having read your message?

• Read receipts must be enabled for everyone in the organization  
  As long as that person is not within your organization or has it turned off, you won’t be able to see any read receipts from that person when you are chatting.
• Messages that are read in the chat window are marked as read receipts by activity in the chat window
  Whether someone reads your message in a notification or in the activity feed, you won’t receive a read receipt if they see it in a notification. The banner notification may also be viewed or responded to if the person sees it or responds to it. Only if there is an active chat in which someone responded to your message will you receive a read receipt.

What doesn’t trigger a read receipt?

Only messages with active recipients will have read receipts. If you view a message from someone’s profile or a banner notification, read receipts won’t be marked as seen.

Turn on or turn off read receipts

Choosing Settings and more at the top of your profile will allow you to see or change this option. You can then turn on or off the Read receipts option.

See who’s read your message in a group chat

In a group chat with less than 20 people, the Read by option allows you to see who has seen your message. You will see the Seen confirmation next to your message when all of your recipients have read your message.

In a group chat, go to the message you want to see who’s read it, then select More options > Read by. There is a list of all people who have read receipt confirmations.

Turn on or turn off read receipts

Would you like to ensure that your message has been read or seen by those you have sent it to? Make use of read receipts to keep track of what you have read. The Seen confirmation will appear next to your text message when they have read your text. If you do not choose this option, you will only be able to see a confirmation that your message has been sent.

When you select your profile picture at the top of the app, you will be able to see or change this option. Select Settings > General next to your profile picture. Turn off or on Read receipts from there.

See who’s read your message in a group chat

You can see in a group chat of 20 people or less who has seen your message by clicking the Read by option.

You can see who has read your message by selecting More > Read by in a group chat. Those who have received read receipt confirmations appear in the list.
