Joining a Zoom meeting

The Zoom desktop and mobile applications, landlines and mobile phones, or H.323 or SIP devices can be used to join an online meeting via email, instant message, the browser, or the Zoom desktop and mobile applications.

Zoom can be downloaded from the Download Center before you can join a Zoom meeting. When you click a link to join, Zoom will prompt you to download and install it.

Zoom offers a number of ways to get familiar with the software, including testing meetings and joining meetings without an account to learn how it works.

Prerequisites for joining a virtual meeting

  • In order to join a Zoom meeting, you need a unique meeting ID, which can be 9, 10, or 11 digits long.

  • A teleconferencing number will be provided in the invitation if you are joining by phone.

  • Enable the “Join from your browser” link

How to join a Zoom meeting on the desktop client

Windows | macOS

  1. Launch Zoom on your desktop.

  2. The following methods can be used to join a meeting:

    • The Join a Meeting option will let you join a meeting without signing in.

    • By signing in, you can join a meeting:

      1. Zoom desktop client must be opened.

      2. Go to the Home tab.

      3. Join by clicking here.

  3. Your display name and meeting ID should be entered.

    • To prevent your default name from appearing, sign in and change your name.

    • Enter your display name if you aren’t logged in.

  4. Audio and/or video can be connected.

  5. Join by clicking here.

Linux

  1. Zoom must be opened from a desktop client.

  2. Here are some ways to join a meeting:

    • Click Join a Meeting if you wish to join without logging in.

    • Sign in if you’d like to join:

      1. Zoom desktop client must be opened.

      2. Go to the Home tab.

      3. Join by clicking here.

  3. Name and ID number of the meeting.

    • To prevent your default name from appearing, sign in and change your name.

    • Enter your display name if you aren’t logged in.

  4. Whether you want to connect audio or video is up to you.

  5. Join by clicking here.

How to join a Zoom meeting on the mobile app

Android

  1. Zoom should be open on your mobile device.

  2. The following methods can be used to join a meeting:

    • To join a meeting without signing in, tap Join a Meeting.

    • Tap Join after logging into Zoom.

  3. Your display name and meeting ID number should be entered.

    • To prevent your default name from appearing, sign in and change your name.

    • Enter your display name if you aren’t logged in.

  4. Click on Join Meeting after selecting audio and/or video.

iOS

  1. Launch Zoom on your mobile device. The Zoom mobile app is available in the App Store if you haven’t downloaded it yet.

  2. Use one of these methods to join a meeting:

    • You can join a meeting without signing in by tapping the Join a Meeting button.

    • Tap Join after signing in to Zoom.

  3. Your display name and meeting ID number should be entered.

    • To prevent your default name from appearing, sign in and change your name.

    • Enter your display name if you aren’t logged in.

  4. Choose whether you want to join audio or video.

How to join a Zoom meeting on a web browser

Web

Google Chrome

  1. Chrome should be open.

  2. Visit join.zoom.us.

  3. The host/organizer will provide you with a meeting ID.

  4. Join by clicking here.

    • The Zoom desktop client must be opened if you are joining the meeting for the first time from Google Chrome.

    • Choosing the Always open this type of link in the associated app check box will enable you to skip this step the next time you open a link of this type.

    • To start a Zoom Meeting (PC) or open Zoom.us (Mac), click the Open Zoom Meetings (PC) or Open Zoom.us (Mac) button.

Taking a safari

  1. Make sure Safari is open.

  2. Visit join.zoom.us to get started.

  3. If the host/organizer has provided you with a meeting ID, please enter it here.

  4. Please click on the Join button.

  5. Click on the Allow button when you are asked if you would like to open zoom.us.

Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer

  1. Make sure that Edge or Internet Explorer is open on your computer.

  2. You can join Zoom by going to join.zoom.us.

  3. If the host/organizer has provided you with a meeting ID, please enter it here.

  4. Please click on the Join button.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. FireFox should now be open.

  2. To join Zoom, you need to go to the website join.zoom.us.

  3. If the host/organizer has provided you with a meeting ID, please enter it here.

  4. Please click on the Join button.

    • When you join from Firefox for the first time, you will probably be prompted to open Zoom or to install Zoom if you do not already have it installed.

    • Select the check box next to the Zoom MTG links check box if you would like to skip this step in the future.

    • Open the link by clicking on it.

How to join a Zoom meeting through other methods

Email

  1. Click the join button in the email you received or the calendar invitation you received.

  2. Please click Allow if the Zoom window is prompted to open, depending on the default web browser you use.

Messaging

It is possible for others to send you a meeting request by instant message if you are online, using either the Zoom desktop client or the Zoom mobile app. Incoming message notifications are sent to your phone, letting you know who is calling and providing you with a ringtone as well. When you are contacted by the person you are calling to join a meeting, simply select Accept.

Telephone

  1. You will receive a teleconference number in your email invitation, which you should dial on your phone.

  2. Using the dial pad on your computer, enter the ID number of the meeting when prompted.

Note: The participating computer will have the option to allow you to enter your 6-digit participant ID in order to associate your computer with the meeting if you have already joined the meeting via computer. As soon as you are prompted to enter your participant ID, simply press # again when prompted to enter it on your computer if you have not already done so.

H.323/SIP

  1. In the meeting invitation, you will find an IP address that you need to dial (the add-on Room Connector port is required to do this).

  2. The meeting ID is entered by touching the tones (DTMF) followed by # to enter the meeting number.
    The meeting can also be joined directly by dialing the number 192.168.10.55#000111000 on your computer or mobile device.

How to join a meeting with the Zoom web client

With Zoom’s web client, users can be added as participants to a meeting from a web browser, without the need to download any software or plugins.

Join a Zoom meeting without downloading the app

Note: In order for the participants of the meeting to be able to join through their browser, a link must be enabled by the meeting host.

  1. If your invitation to the meeting is in an email or calendar, you can find the meeting invite link there.

  2. You can join the meeting by clicking the join link at the bottom of this page.
    You will be prompted by a pop-up window on your web browser to download the application or open it for use.

  3. Click the Cancel button at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  4. On the bottom of the page, you will find a link that will allow you to join.
    There will be a new page that will be displayed to you.

  5. To grant Zoom permission to use the microphone and camera on your computer, simply click Allow.

  6. Become a part of the meeting by registering your name with the meeting host.

  7. Choose the check box to keep my name in mind for future meetings if you wish (optional).

  8. Please click on the Join button.

Join from a computer

The Zoom Client can be downloaded from the Zoom website and installed on your Mac or PC. Click on the meeting link in your email again once you have reopened your email. If you do this, you should be able to automatically join the meeting. Open the Zoom app that you just downloaded, and click on Join a Meeting, enter the meeting ID or link that you received via e-mail, if it does not work immediately.

Do I need to install Zoom to join a meeting?

Joining on your computer

It is possible that you might be prompted with an option to download the Zoom app if you haven’t downloaded it yet, or if the last time you tried to download it, it didn’t work. There is an option at the bottom of the screen that allows you to join from your browser (rather than download an app) if you want to join from your browser rather than download the app.
