Recording layouts in zoom App
Depending on the layout of the video in your meeting, there are different recording layouts for local and cloud recordings.
Video layout for recording is the same as the video layout for the participant or host who started recording. Participants can start a local recording while in active speaker view if the host grants them permission to do so. In that case, the recording layout will be displayed as active speaker view.
Local or cloud recording layouts (desktop client)
Local or cloud recordings can be used for these recording layouts:
Active speaker
You will only see the video from the active speaker if you are in active speaker view.
Note: In cloud recordings, only participants’ names can be displayed.
Gallery view
The presentation will look similar to the meeting client and display a grid layout of the video of the participants if you are in the gallery view. There can be a maximum of 25 participants displayed in the gallery view.
Note: The names of participants can only be displayed in cloud recordings.
Shared window
As a result, if you share a window that does not take up the whole screen, you will see black bars to the right and left of the window in the recording. Even if you enable the active speaker thumbnail or gallery view while sharing the window, the participant’s video will still appear in the top-right corner.
Tip: In order to make this recording, you need to share a window. If you don’t want the active speaker window to overlap with the window that is being recorded, you can use this layout.
Local recording layouts (desktop client)
Local recordings only support this recording layout:
Shared screen with thumbnail gallery view
If a participant shares their screen, the video of that participant will appear in the top-right corner. You will still see the thumbnail in the top-right corner of the recording if you drag or minimize the thumbnails.
Shared screen with large active speaker thumbnail
The local recording will also display a larger active speaker thumbnail in the top-right corner of your screen if you share your screen with the active speaker thumbnail and enlarge it. The active speaker thumbnail will still appear in the upper-right corner of the recording even if you drag it to another location during the meeting.
Notes:
- In this type of layout, the size of the thumbnails for cloud recordings will only show the standard size for the active speaker.
- The dual monitor recording layout cannot be used when the dual monitor mode is enabled, and the standard active speaker thumbnail size will be recorded when the local recording is done.
Cloud recording layouts (desktop client)
Only cloud recordings support these recording layouts:
Shared screen with active speaker
The recording will display the active speaker thumbnail in the top right corner if you share your screen with the active speaker thumbnail. During the recording, the active speaker thumbnail will still appear in the top-right corner if you drag it to another location during the meeting.
Shared screen without active speaker or gallery view
Your cloud recording settings will only display the shared screen if you share your screen without the active speaker thumbnail or if you disable Record thumbnails while sharing the option.
Note: When viewing the recording in the Zoom web portal, you will see the active speaker video next to the recorded shared screen if you enabled Record active speaker, gallery view, and shared screen separately.
Cloud recording layouts (mobile app)
The Zoom mobile app supports only the following recording layouts when you start a cloud recording.
Note: Zoom’s mobile app can only record to the cloud.
Active speaker
You will only see the video from the active speaker if you are in active speaker view.
Note:
- The mobile app does not support the gallery view recording layout. You will still see the speaker’s video if you are viewing the meeting in gallery view.
- Depending on the aspect ratio supported by the camera and whether the device is in portrait or landscape mode, you might see black bars to the right or left of the video.
Shared screen with active speaker
The recording will show the active speaker thumbnail in the top-right corner if you share your screen with the active speaker. You can also record annotations.
Shared screen without active speaker
The recording will only display the shared screen if you disable the Option to record thumbnails while sharing in the cloud recording settings.
