Reduce background noise in meeting in Microsoft Teams
During a Teams meeting or call, when your mic is turned on, it can be difficult for others to focus on the conversation. Papers may be shuffling, doors may be slamming, dogs may be barking, and so on. Teams provides three levels of noise suppression as a way to help keep meeting participants focused. This feature can be accessed both through the desktop app or via the iOS app to allow you to select one of those levels.
Set the noise suppression level
In case you decide at any time that you would like to change this setting, you can do so. When you change the setting on your conferencing device, you will need to recognize that it will carry over to the next meeting or call once you do so.
You can use the second procedure in order to change the level of noise suppression during the meeting in which you are currently participating.
From the main Teams window
- You can change your profile picture in Teams by clicking on the profile picture at the top right corner of the screen, then by going into the Settings section of the page.
On the left of the screen, select Devices from the left hand menu, and then select one of the options under Noise suppression from the list on the right.
• Auto (default) : This option determines the noise suppression level for your Teams app on the basis of local noise.
• High : This setting will suppress all of the background noise that is not speech.
Notes:
- Your computer’s processor must be able to use AVX2 in order for this option to function correctly, since AVX2 is an advanced vector extension.
- The resources of the computer are used more when this option is enabled.
• Low : There are a wide variety of noise sources that can be suppressed with this device, including low-level noise sources such as computer fans and air conditioners, and other low-level sources of background noise in a community that are causing persistent background noise. The music can be played using this setting.
• Off : It is disabled in order to prevent noise from being suppressed. If you are using a high-fidelity microphone in a low-noise environment, you will want to use this setting.
From a meeting window
- You may access the device settings for your meeting by clicking More options and then clicking Device settings, which can be found in the meeting controls.
- Make sure you select one of the options under Noise suppression. For a detailed description of each option, please refer to step 2 above.
Set the noise suppression level on iOS
- Choose a profile picture that suits your style and then choose Settings from the drop-down menu.
- You will then be able to select Calling from the menu.
- Select an option from the Noise suppression menu.
