Replying and managing chat messages in zoom App
Sending messages, files, or images can be edited or deleted. Your edited message’s content will appear in the search results recipients see in the chat. Deleted chat content and files are not accessible within Zoom, even if the recipient does not receive a notification. All plaThere is a typing indicator on all platforms, which notifies you when someone is typing a message.
Windows | macOS
Basic text formatting
- Log in to the Zoom desktop client.
- Select a chat thread from the Chat tab.
- Type your message.
- Highlight the part that you want to format.
Zoom will offer you these options.: Bold the highlighted text.
- / : Italicize the highlighted text.
: Strikethrough the highlighted text.
: Begin a bulleted list.
: Begin a numbered list.
- … : Open the rich text formatting options. See the next section for more info.
Note: Rich text formatting options can also be accessed by clicking theFormat button.
- Select the desired formatting option.
- Select the Send button or enter the desired formatting option.
Note: If using rich text formatting, you must use the blue send button, as the Enter key will just make a new paragraph.
You can also use these keyboard shortcuts to format text:
- Bold: Ctrl/Cmd + B
- Italicize: Ctrl/Cmd + I
- Strike-through: Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + X
- Bulleted list: Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + 8
Rich text formatting
In addition to the basic formatting options, rich text formatting may also be added:
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- In the Chat tab, select a chat thread.
- Click the
Format button, or enter some text, highlight the text, and click the … option. The following options are available:
: Bold the highlighted text.
- / : Italicize the highlighted text.
: Underline the selected text.
: Strikethrough the highlighted text.
: Click this option to access both adjust both the color of the text itself and/or the color highlight around the text. The Clear option removes any selected colors and reverts the text to standard black/white formatting.
: Adjust the size of the font. Choose between Small, Medium, and Large text sizes.
: Insert a link for the highlighted text.
: Adjust the style of the text, choosing from Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and Paragraph.
: Begin a bulleted list.
: Begin a numbered list.
: Increase the indent of the selected text.
: Decrease the indent of the selected text.
: Create a quote of text. See the section below for more information.
: Clear all formatting of the selected text.
- Click the blue send button to send your message to the contact(s) or channel.
The blue Send button must be used if you are using rich text formatting, as the Enter key will just make a new paragraph.
Replying to a message
All replies related to a message are kept in the same thread; this makes it easier for users to identify replies.
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- In the Chat tab, select a chat thread.
- Hover over the message you want to reply to.
- Click the reply icon
- Enter your reply, then press Enter.
You can include text, screenshots, files, code snippets, emoji, and animated GIFs in your response.
You can reply below the parent message. All replies will appear below the parent message.
Enter : and at least two characters to find matching emojis to add to your message or reply. As an example, :jo provides :joy:, :joy_cat:, and :joystick: emojis. You can also click the smiley icon in the right corner of the text box to see all available emojis, gifs, and saved gifs to select from.
Quoting messages
When responding to a specific message in a complex chat thread, quoting the message can help others know exactly what your message is in response to. How to quote a message:
- Right-click the message you want to quote and select Quote
- A new reply is opened for you to enter your message.
- Click the send icon to post the response. The quoted message will appear slightly above your response in grey, while you response is below the quoted message in the default text color.
Adding reactions to messages
You can react to messages by adding an emoji.
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- In the Chat tab, select a chat thread.
- Hover over the message you want to react to.
- Click the reaction icon
.
- Select an emoji. You can select from the same emojis available when composing a chat message.
The icon will appear below the message.
- To remove the reaction, click the emoji that was added to the message.
Managing chat messages
You can view more options to manage your chat messages.
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- In the Chat tab, select a chat thread.
- Hover over the message you want to share, click the ellipses icon
.
- Use of these options:
Follow Message
Enable push notifications for replies to the selected message. Push notifications must be set to All messages for the chat thread.
Note: You will automatically follow your own messages and messages that you’ve replied to.
Unfollow Message
If you click Unfollow Message, you will no longer receive push notifications for replies to the selected message, regardless of the push notification settings for the chat thread. You will also no longer receive push notifications when someone mentions you in a reply.
Bookmark Message
Bookmark important messages, allowing you to quickly view them later on.
You can view your bookmarked messages by clicking the bookmarked messages icon.
Posted in will be followed by the contact’s name if the thread was originally with another contact. Started in a channel is followed by the name of the channel if you starred a message there. You can view the original message by clicking Jump.
Previously, starring a message was called bookmarking. To avoid confusion, you will now be able to bookmark individual messages rather than staring a contact or channel.
Remove bookmarks
Removing the message from the bookmarked messages section will remove the bookmark on the message.
You can also remove a bookmark from a message by hovering over it and clicking on the yellow bookmark icon in the bookmarked messages section.
Share a Message
Please share the message (text), image, or file with another contact or channel.
Note: You can only share a message with one contact or channel at a time.
Pin for Everyone
The message will be pinned for everyone in the current group chat or channel. Pinnable messages appear at the top of the chat window with a pin icon. Only one message can be pinned at a time. Click the info icon beside the channel name, then click Pin History to see a list of pinned messages.
To hide or unpin a pinned message, hover over it, click the ellipsis icon , then click Hide or Unpin for Everyone.
Note: All members of the group chat or channel can pin or unpin messages including admins and regular members.
Mark as Unread
Messages (text), images, and files only have this option.
The Chat tab and the left-side panel will display an unread message badge. Zoom will also display Unread above messages.
Mark as Read
Messages (text), images, and files only have this option.
The unread message badge should be removed from the Chat tab and left-side panel. Unread will also be removed from above messages.
Edit
Admins who enable advanced encryption for chat will not be able to edit messages.
Click Save to edit a message that you have already sent.
The edited message will now appear in Zoom, indicating that it has been edited for everyone.
It is also possible to edit the last message that you sent by clicking in the chat message box and pressing the up arrow key (*).
Open Image / Open File
Note: This option is only available on images and files.
Open the image or file using your system’s image viewer or default application for the file type.
Tip: You can also click the image to open it directly in Zoom.
Open File Location
Note: This option is only available on images and files.
Open the local directory where the image or file is stored.
Copy
Copy the message (text), file, or image.
Tip: If the message contains a URL, right-click the URL then click Copy to only copy the URL.
Add to Emoji
Note: This option is only available on images and GIFs.
Add the image or animated GIF to your saved emojis.
Delete
Delete any items you’ve sent. Items that have been deleted will not appear in Zoom for You will be notified that a message has been deleted in Zoom, but other participants will not.tification.
Note: When you delete a message with replies, recipients will see This message has been deleted, and replies will not be deleted.
Linux
Replying to a message
Responding to a message keeps related replies together in one thread so users can easily identify each other’s responses.
- Open Zoom on your desktop.
- Select a chat thread from the Chat tab.
- When you are ready to respond, hover your mouse over the message.
- You will see an icon that will allow you to reply.
- Press Enter to send the message.
You may send me comments that include text, screenshots, files, code snippets, animated GIFs, emoji, and more.
Your reply will be displayed below the parent message. There will be a section for any further replies to appear under the parent message.
Added reactions to messages
Adding an emoji to a message lets you respond.
- Connect to Zoom through the desktop client.
- Select a chat thread from the Chat tab.
- Then, click to respond.
- You will see a smiley icon.
- Click on an emoji. Whenever you compose a chat message, you can choose from the same emojis that are available.
You will be able to see this icon beneath your message.
- If you wish to remove the reaction from a message, please click on the reaction icon.
Bookmarking a message
When you mark messages as important, they are stored as bookmarked messages that can be accessed later with a single click.
- Connect to Zoom using the desktop client.
- Open a chat thread in the Chat tab.
- Tap the star icon to mark it.
- Select a message to bookmark.
- The bookmarked messages are displayed in the chat panel by clicking the bookmark icon.
You will see posted by followed by the name of the original contact if the thread was with another contact. You will see posted in accompanied by the name of the channel if you have bookmarked a message in that channel. - To remove a message from the bookmarked messages, hover over the message and click the yellow bookmark icon. For more information, click Jump.
Note:
Starring a message used to be called bookmarking. Messages are still bookmarked by themselves, so you don’t lose track of them.
Managing chat messages
Managing the messages you send and receive in a chat can be done in a variety of ways.
- Log into the Zoom desktop client by entering your user name and password.
- Select Chat from the drop-down menu.
- Select the conversation you want to be part of.
- You can also click the ellipses icon next to the message you want to share.
- Choose from the following options:
Edit
Note: The admin can enable advanced encryption for a chat room and you will not be able to edit any messages.
Previously sent messages can be edited and saved.
The edited message will now appear in Zoom and indicate that everyone has seen it.
Delete
If you sent anything, please delete it. Deleted items will not be visible to recipients in Zoom.
If you delete a message, Zoom will display that notification, but other participants won’t see it.
Note:
A message that has a response will be shown as This message has been deleted, but the reply will not be deleted if you delete the message.
Copy
Note:
Messages (text messages) and images can be sent using this option.
The message text or image should be copied and pasted into the message.
Add to Emoji
Note:
Images and GIFs are the only types of files that support this option.
If you want to save the animated GIF or image to your saved emojis, add it.
Click on the Save button to save the file
Note:
It is only possible to select images and files with this option.
Your computer should now be able to save the image or file you have selected.
Tip:
The image can also be opened directly in Zoom by clicking it.
Pin for Everyone
Messages pinned in group chats or channels are visible to everyone. A pin icon is displayed above the chat window on top of the message that has been pinned. A pin can only be applied to one message at a time. To view a list of all the pinned messages, you will have to click on the info icon at the bottom of the channel name.
When you hover over a pinned message, you can choose to hide or remove it directly for everyone by clicking the ellipsis icon next to the message.
Note:
Admins and regular members are all able to pin or unpin messages in a group chat or channel.
Android | iOS
Replying to a message
Replying to a message allows you to keep all relevant replies in a single thread, making it easier for users to see each others’ messages.
- Open the Zoom mobile app on your mobile device and sign in.
- Then, select a chat thread from the Chat & Meet tab.
- In order to reply to a message, tap the message and hold it for a few seconds, then tap Reply. Alternatively, you may also select a reply icon from below the message you wish to reply to.
- A new screen will appear for you to send your reply.
- Tap on the send icon, then enter your message.
Note: In addition to text or voice responses, users can also attach files, snippets of code, emoticons, and animated GIFs. When you reply, your reply will appear in the Replies section.
- Participants within the chat can see responses under the parent message by tapping a number of replies.
Formatting text
If you wish to format a message or portion of text additional way, you may do so in the following way:
- Log into the Zoom app on your mobile device.
- Select the Chat & Meetings tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
- This will take you to the Chat & Meetings screen.
- Then you will be able to format the message by tapping and holding on it. In this case you can select a portion of the message by tapping-and-dragging, then by tapping-and-holding on the selected portion. A formatting box will appear showing the following options:

- Highlight the text in bold.
- / :
- The text in bold should be italicized.
:
- The highlighted text should be underlined.
:
- Strike through the highlights.
:
- Create bullet points.
:
- Number your list.
:
- Write a quote about the text in your list. For more information, please follow the links below.
- Click send when you are finished.
Quoting messages
It’s helpful to quote a particular message in a complicated chat thread, so others know exactly what you’re responding to. Using the quote button:
- You can choose to quote a message by holding it down and selecting Quote
- Quote. A new reply box will open for you to type your response.
- Click submit to submit your response. Rather than your current response appearing above the quoted text in grey, the quoted message will appear slightly below your current response in the default text color.
Added reactions to messages
Adding an emoji to a message lets you respond.
- Zoom’s mobile app requires you to sign in.
- Click Chat and Meet to open a chat thread.
- You can respond to messages by tapping and holding them.
- Emojis can be selected. Similarly, you can choose from the same set of emojis when you compose a message in the chat window.
Emojis will appear beneath the message that you compose. - By reaching out to the icon under the message you can remove the reaction that was added.
Managing chat messages
You can manage your chat messages by viewing more options.
- Zoom’s mobile app requires you to sign in.
- Select a chat thread in Chat & Meet.
- Select one of the following options:
Copy Message 
Note:
Messages that are text only have this option.
The text of the message should be copied.
Tip:
A message with a URL can be copied by holding the URL and selecting Copy.
Follow Message
Enable push notifications for a selected message if you wish to receive replies to that message. You should also ensure that push notifications are enabled for all messages in the chat thread.
Note:
The messages that you have replied to and those messages that you have sent will automatically be followed by you.
Unfollow Message
Regardless of the settings for push notification settings for the chat thread, clicking Unfollow Message will disable push notifications for replies to the selected message. In addition to disabling push notifications, this will also stop any notifications if you are mentioned in a reply.
Reply 
Answer the message you received.
Share 
Sharing the message (text), an image, or a file with another person or contact is an effective way to spread the message.
Mark as Unread 
Note:
In order to use this option, you must be viewing a message (text), an image, or a file.
The chat thread and the Chat tab should have an unread message badge. When Zoom places Unread above a message, it will also display an unread state.
Mark as Read 
Note:
Files, images, and messages (text) are the only ones that offer this option.
In the chat thread and in the Chat tab, remove the unread message badge. The Unread label is removed as well on the message.
Pin for Everyone 
Please pin the message to the top of the channel or group chat for everyone to see. With a pin icon appearing at the top of the chat window, the pinned message is visible in all chat rooms. Messages may be pinned at one time only. For a list of pinned messages, tap the info icon next to the channel name.
If you would like to hide or unpin a pinned message, tap on the ellipsis icon next to the pinned message, then select Hide or Unpin for Everyone from the drop-down menu.
Note:
Admins and regular members are all able to pin or unpin messages in a group chat or channel.
Save as Emoji 
Note:
You can only use this option when it comes to images and GIFs.
I recommend adding the image or animated GIF you found to your emoji collection.
Star 
It would be beneficial if you could mark important messages in your inbox so that they might be more easily viewed later.
When you tap the Starred button, you will be able to see all messages that you have starred in the Meet & Chat tab.
Edit Message 
Note:
Your admin may have enabled advanced encryption in your chat room, which prevents you from editing messages.
If you have already sent a message, you can edit its content by tapping Done. You will be able to see the context and what is being edited under a blue highlight when editing the message.
This message will be shown in Zoom for all participants to see, and it will state that the message was edited after it is shown.
Save Image
The picture will be saved on your device when you save it.
Delete
If you have sent any item, please delete it. Items that are deleted from Zoom will be removed from view by recipients.
In Zoom, you will be shown a notification that says you deleted a message, but your participation will not be seen by other participants.
Note: Replies will remain in the message if you delete it. Recipients will see I have deleted this message.
