Secure Your Slack: Using Mandatory Mobile Browsers on Enterprise Grid
Hey there, Enterprise Grid owners! Want to boost your organization’s mobile security? You can now require team members to use a secure browser when they’re accessing Slack on their personal devices. This applies to both signing in and opening external links. Let’s walk through how to set this up.
Before You Start
- Make sure your team has updated their Slack app to version 20.03.20 or later on iOS and Android.
- This feature works with BlackBerry Access and Microsoft Edge on personal devices.
Setting It Up
- Fire up Slack on your computer and click your workspace name in the top left corner.
- Look for “Settings & administration” and then click “Organisation settings.”
- On the left, you’ll see “Security.” Click that, then “Security settings.”
- Scroll until you find “Mandatory mobile browser” and click “Enable.”
- Choose your preferred browser from the dropdown menu.
- Hit “Enable” one more time to confirm.
Pro tip: Consider turning on “Block file downloads and message copying” too. This prevents folks from copying links and opening them in less secure browsers.
Extra Steps for BlackBerry Access Users
If you’re using BlackBerry Access, there’s a bit more to do:
- Head to your BlackBerry Dynamics dashboard and find the “Apps” tab on the left.
- Click on “BlackBerry Access.”
- In the pop-up, click “App config with default values.”
- Check the boxes for:
- “Allow external apps to open HTTP/HTTPS URLs through BlackBerry Access”
- “Enable third-party applications”
- To let BlackBerry Access play nice with the Slack app, add these to the text box: slackbeta, slack
And that’s it! Your team’s mobile Slack experience is now more secure. If anyone needs help setting this up on their phone, point them to the “Use a mandatory mobile browser” guide.Remember, this feature is just for Enterprise Grid subscribers. Stay safe out there!
