It is important to note that shared channels can be divided into three roles: owners, owners of teams, and members of the team. In the case of a shared channel, a user can create it, members can be added to it, and many more things can be done by different roles within a shared channel.
Note: While the public preview phase is in progress, it is likely that some changes will have to be made to the shared channels, and it may be necessary to make these changes before the channels can be released to the general public. It is recommended that you switch to the Teams public preview in order to access this feature and others that are upcoming.

Note: The team owner may request that you be added to a shared channel if he or she can’t see the files, conversations, or member list in a shared channel and you are a team owner.
Note: The admin of your team may be able to help you out if you aren’t able to create a shared channel for your team, but in any case, you should talk to the team owner if you don’t see the option.
Channel owners
Owners of shared channels are the ones who are responsible for creating, implementing, managing, and maintaining the shared channels.
Owners of shared channels can do the following:
- It is possible to add or remove members and owners of shared channels
- Shared channels can be managed, edited, and deleted in a variety of ways
- Shared channels that have been deleted can be restored
- You can override the default channels settings that are inherited from your team by clicking on this button
Here are a few things you should know:
- The member who has agreed to participate in a shared channel with the team cannot be removed from the team if they have already agreed to do so, as the shared channel has already been shared directly with that member.
- The host organization will automatically convert existing members of a shared channel into owners of the shared channel in the event that the channel owner leaves the organization for example.
Note: The channel owner may want to contact the admin if he or she notices that there is no option for sharing the channel with someone outside of his or her organization. In any other case, your admin may need to be contacted.
Channel members
With this shared channel, members can collaborate with members outside of their own teams and organizations without necessarily having to switch organizations when they join the channel.
Note: It is not possible to add a guest to a channel when you share it with one, but you can share a channel with them by using a B2B direct connect channel if you share it with them as guests. On the following page, you will find out more information about guests and shared channels, as well as how you can get in contact with them.
