Spotlighting participants’ videos in zoom App
Overview
Participants will only see the active speakers for the spotlight video if they are among the nine participants listed above. Screen sharing can also be used for spotlighting. Typically, a keynote speaker is highlighted using this feature.
While this article discusses how to spotlight a video within the Zoom desktop client and Zoom mobile app, you can also spotlight videos within Zoom Rooms.
You can also pin up to nine videos, ensuring that they are the only speakers on your device. Active Speaker will still work for other participants.
Prerequisites for spotlighting
In a meeting,
- Co-host or hostess rights for the meeting
- On the Zoom desktop client or Zoom on the go
- With three (3) or more video participants
Note: - Windows or macOS desktop clients with version 5.2.2 are required to spotlight multiple videos
In a Webinar
- Participation in the webinar as a host or co-host
- Via Zoom desktop application or Zoom mobile application
- At least two (2) panelists, one with video capabilities, on the call
- Note:
- The desktop client version 5.2.2 on Windows or macOS is required to spotlight multiple videos

- You can spotlight a participant by hovering over their video and selecting …
- Showcase for Everyone.
- (Optional) Press the Add Spotlight button instead of Step 1 or 2 to spotlight additional participants (up to 9 in total).
To cancel a Spotlight
- You can remove the spotlight by clicking on the Remove Spotlight button in the video area.
- A speaker view will then appear.
Spotlight when I speak
You will want to enable this automatic self-spotlight feature to ensure that you will automatically be shown when you are in Speaker view and talking. Recording locally can be a great use of this feature.
Here’s how to enable it:
- Log on to the desktop client by clicking here
- After clicking your profile picture, you will be able to select the settings icon.
- Select Video from the list.
- If you check this box, you will be speaking during the video.
Linux
- To spotlight a participant, right click on his or her video.
- Select Spotlight Video.
To cancel a Spotlight
- In the area of the video, click Cancel for Spotlight Video.
- The meeting will be returned to the Speaker view.
iOS
- Participants will be tapped on the shoulder. An iPad display will have this at the top of the screen, while an iPhone display will have this at the bottom of the screen.
- To display a specific participant, tap on her or his name.
- You will then be able to choose a specific video to spotlight.
To cancel a Spotlight
- Participate in the tap. On an iPad, this will be at the top of the screen. On an iPhone, it will be at the bottom.
- Touch their names.
- The Spotlight Video can be cancelled.
Android
- Participants should be tapped.
- To spotlight a participant, simply tap the name of that participant.
- Select Video Spotlight.
To cancel a Spotlight
- Participants should be tapped on the shoulder.
- If the participant’s name is called, tap them on the shoulder.
- If you want to cancel the spotlight video, tap Cancel.
