Even though the VDI client and plug-in are backwards compatible with certain versions of the VDI software, it is still important to update them periodically so that you can take advantage of important new features and critical security updates.
This article covers:
- Installation locations
- Updating VDI
Prerequisites for updating Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
- Administrator access to systems management software
- Existing VDI setup
Installation locations
As far as the VDI client and plug-in are concerned, they are two separate programs with their own locations where they can be installed:
-
It will be necessary to install an application on the virtual desktop during the installation of the VDI client, commonly referred to as the host installer. Intune and SCCM are two systems management software programs that can be used to deploy the host installer, which is a .msi file. If you use the same configuration as the non-VDI client, then it will respond to the same .msi file.
-
There will be a thin client installed with the VDI Plug-in. By itself, this plug-in is not a standalone application, but rather an enhancement to the VDI host installer that allows a thin client to bridge a connection to the VDI over a .ica or .pcoip connection. Media offloading can be achieved by doing this, and the VDI server can be relieved of memory and process load by doing so.
The default installation directories are:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Zoom VDI for the VDI client
- C:\Program Files (x86)\user entered location for the VDI plug-in
Updating VDI
-
For the preferred update version, please download the installation file.
-
You should update both the VDI client as well as the VDI plug-in at the same time if you are updating both simultaneously. Unless this is possible, you should first update the client and then update the plug-in if it cannot be done.
-
Make use of systems management software (SCCM, Intune, etc.) to update the files in the current installation directories by utilizing the systems management software. As a matter of fact, you may be able to update your registry settings with the same software if necessary.
Note: Make sure that you do not install the two components in the same location at the same time if you are also doing new installations during the update process.
