To make the web experience more accessible to people with visual impairments, the following article has been written to help people who use screen readers with Skype to make the Skype accessibility content set more accessible for people with visual impairments. It is possible to send instant messages (IMs) to other Skype users whenever you are using Skype on a device that is equipped with a screen reader (Either VoiceOver on iOS or TalkBack on Android) when you are using Skype on a device with a screen reader.   Notes:

• If you are reading this article, I am going to assume that you are using an Android or iPhone device in order to read it. It’s important to keep in mind that Android tablets and iPads may have different navigation styles and gestures, depending on the type of device you’re using.
• To make this article as useful as possible, I am assuming that you are using VoiceOver (for iOS) or TalkBack (for Android) for the purpose of the article.

Create a chat conversation

1. A new conversation can be started quickly within the Chats tab by sliding right or left until you hear “New conversation,” and then double tapping the screen until the screen becomes active.
2. You can swipe right by swiping left. When you hear the words, “Seek for people, groups, and messages,” you should double-tap on the screen twice, after which you will be able to search for people, groups, and messages. In order to help us locate the person you are seeking, please provide the person’s name, address, or phone number in the message. During the typing process, the screen reader will announce the number of results that have been found as you type.
3. Once you swipe right along the top of the screen until the screen starts to play the results for your search, you will see the first result for the search you had performed when you swipe right along the top. Swiping left or right will allow you to browse through the list. You will be notified as you move along the screen that new contacts have been added.
4. Double-tap the screen to select the person you would like to select. The focus now shifts to the input field in which you can type your message.

Create a group chat

There is no limit to the number of people you can talk to at the same time.

1. You can double-tap the screen in the Chats tab at the bottom of the screen whenever you hear the phrase “New conversation” before you swipe right or left.
2. The first thing you need to do is to swipe right until you see the words “New Group Chat.”. When you hear these words, make sure to double-tap the screen.
3. Whenever you hear the text “Group name”, double-tap the screen and then swipe to the right until you hear the name of the group you want to join. The name of the group should be entered here.
4. Once you have double-tapped the screen, you will hear a pop-up announcing that the screen is ready for use when you hear the words “Next.”.
5. It is necessary to double tap the screen until you hear a voice saying “Search people and bots” in order to be able to view the Search text input field. Swipe right until the screen reads, “Search people and bots”.
6. A person can be added to a group by following the steps below:
   • Please enter the name of the person you would like to contact. Screen readers announce the number of search results found as you type, so that you can begin to search.
   • The first search result will appear on the screen after you have swiped right on the screen after you have heard the sound of the beginning. By swiping left or right, you will be able to browse through the list. When you move through the contacts on your screen, you can hear the screen reader announcing each one as you scroll down.
   • Double-tapping the screen will allow you to select the person you wish to select.

Send a private message to a friend

You can invite another person to join you in a private conversation if you want to do so. There are several ways in which a private conversation can be protected from prying eyes, such as encrypting messages, media files, and calls between parties.

  Notes: In order to access private conversations at the same time, only one device can be used at a time in order to access them simultaneously.

• The content of private conversations will not be displayed in the chat notification notification of a chat list in an effort to maintain the privacy of the information you share on chat lists.

1. You will be able to see the “New conversation” screen as soon as you swipe right or left on the Chat tab after you swipe right or left as soon as you swipe right or left on the Chat tab. In order to scroll through the list, you will need to swipe left or right while holding your finger on the screen. If you move your cursor over one of the contacts, you will hear a message that announces that contact with the help of the screen reader.
6. By double tapping the screen twice, you are able to select a person from the list. A common practice is for individuals to receive invitations to join private conversations, and they are encouraged to participate in the conversation whenever it is convenient for them to do so. You will need to invite the person you wish to send a private message to a private conversation in order to be able to send them a private message. It is then possible for you to send them a private message after you have completed the task above.
   
   Note: For instance, if you wish to switch between Skype and private conversations with the same person in the chat window, you can do so by swipe up the screen with two fingers, then swipe right until the message “Switch to Skype conversation” or “Switch to private conversation” appears, then double tap the screen to activate the switch. There is now a focus on the text input field in which you can type your message.

React to a message

Notes:

• Messages can only be reacted to if they have been sent by someone else.
• Messages sent in private conversations are not able to be reacted to.

1. As you scroll left or right on the chat screen, you will hear the message you wish to respond to and will be able to swipe left or right until you hear it.
2. Using a double-tap on the screen, press and hold the button for a few seconds before letting go of the button.
3. Once you have tapped the screen twice after you have swiped up or down on it, you should be able to hear “React” after you have swiped up or down on it.
4. You can browse the available reactions on your mobile device by using the left and right arrow keys on your device. In order for you to hear what reaction you want to hear, you need to double tap the screen as soon as the reaction you want to hear is heard.

Delete a conversation

Whenever a chat is deleted, all messages within the chat are deleted along with the chat, and once a chat is deleted, it will no longer appear in your recent chat list.

  Note: Whenever you delete a conversation, you will be able to clear your copies of the messages that were sent in the conversation, and you will also be able to remove the conversation from your chat list if you wish. It will not be possible for you to view the history of a conversation if you start a new conversation with someone whose conversation has already been deleted.

1. The best way to delete a conversation is to swipe left or right on the Chats tab and move to the conversation that you wish to delete.
2. Hold the screen in a double-tap position and double-tap it again.
3. As soon as you have swiped from the left to the right and heard the message “Delete conversation,” you can double-tap the screen until you hear the message “Delete conversation.”
4. Depending on what you decide to do, you can either delete the Skype chat with the same person or the private conversation with the same person by swiping right, then double tapping the screen when you are done, or you can delete both Skype chats and private conversations with the same person.
5. It is important to double-tap the screen twice after you hear the word “Delete” to confirm that you want to delete the conversation.

Add photos and videos to a conversation

By adding photos and videos as a message, you are able to enrich your chats with photos and videos. It is possible to access the files from the message list or from the chat gallery, whichever place you prefer, as these are the places where the files are stored.

1. When you hear “Open camera and media file picker,” double tap the screen, then swipe left or right until you hear the message that says, “Open camera and media file picker.”.
2. As a result of swiping left or right in either direction, you will hear a message stating “Open gallery.” When you double tap when you hear the message “Open gallery.” you will be taken to a gallery that shows your media files.

After hearing “send to”, double-tap the screen until the person’s name is displayed on the screen, which is followed by a swipe to the right until you hear the word “sent to”, then double-tap the screen again until you hear the word “sent”.
