Use a screen reader to explore and navigate Skype for Windows

In order to explore and navigate the app’s main views and elements, and move between views and functions, you can use your keyboard and a screen reader such as Narrator, the Windows built-in screen reader, or NVDA to navigate the app with your keyboard and a screen reader. This article contains information for users of the latest version of Skype that can be used with the methods mentioned in this article. Get to know the Skype layout
An important part of Skype is the main content pane which consists of a list and a content pane. As you select a view from the list pane, the elements that are included in it change based on what view you selected.
List pane
In the main content pane, you can find a list pane that is located to the left. Build a mental model of the Skype list pane if you have low vision, or if you have a visual disability, or if you have limited mobility as a result of these conditions. Below is a table which describes the areas of the list pane as well as the specific elements within it.

Content pane
On the Skype screen, there is a content pane that can be found on the right side.

The chat history for the selected contact or chat will appear in the content pane when you select the contact or chat in the list pane.

A row at the top of the content pane is devoted to offering a variety of options, such as accessing shared media and links, searching within a certain conversation, starting a video or audio call with other chat participants, or adding new participants to a conversation.

Navigate using the keyboard

By pressing either the Tab key or the Shift+Tab key, you will be able to move forward through the elements within Skype, or you will be able to move backwards.

There is an arrow key at the top and bottom of the list pane that allows you to move between tabs.

Using the Up and Down arrows on your keyboard, you can move from one list item to the other in a list pane.

You can select an item by pressing Enter after you have selected it. Using the Esc key will close the dialog or return the focus to the previous window.

Special considerations for Skype
Change the text size
You can adjust the font size displayed in Skype by following the steps below:

If you want to enlarge the text display size, you should press Ctrl+Shift+equals sign (=) together.

Using Ctrl+minus sign (-), you will be able to decrease the size of the displayed text.

Pressing Ctrl+0 will reset the text display size to its default value.
Operate Skype with speech recognition
People with limited mobility may find it helpful to use speech recognition tools to operate Microsoft products, including Skype, such as those who have limited mobility, who may have difficulty using a keyboard or mouse, or who may prefer to use voice commands.
Speech recognition tools can be purchased online or included with the Windows operating system as part of the Speech Recognition functionality. Refer to Use speech recognition for instructions on how to enable Speech Recognition on your computer.
