Why has my credit/debit card been charged when I haven’t made a Skype purchase?
I would like to suggest that you check these scenarios in order to determine whether Skype is charging your credit card or debit card:
Have you made a Skype purchase?
Using your online account, you can log in and check your recent orders and you can also compare your charges with what you’ve seen on your bank statement if you’ve recently made an order. Taking into account that VAT may have been added to the price, it may be different. Get more help with checking your purchase history
You can check the status of your order by clicking here. You will see a DELIVERED status for your order, which means that the purchase has been added to your account and your credit card has been charged.
Please contact customer service if you do not recognize the charge and request a refund. According to the refund policy section of Skype’s Terms of Use, we provide refunds for Skype products based on their terms of use.
Don’t have a Skype account?
The customer service department at Skype can help you if you see a Skype charge on your statement but you do not have a Skype account.
Is the charge a recurring payment?
Did you previously purchase Skype Credit?
Depending on your previous purchase of Skype Credit, it is possible that you have already set up Auto-recharge on your account. Using auto-recharge is a great way to ensure that your credit will never run out if it drops below a certain amount, as it tops up your credit automatically.
There is an option in your account where you can disable Auto-recharge if you no longer wish to top up your Skype Credit.
Do you have a subscription?
In the event that you have signed up for a subscription, it will automatically renew at the end of the initial period and you will be charged with the same payment method that you used to sign up for it in the first place. It is necessary for you to cancel your subscription in order to stop the recurring payments from occurring.
Does your card provider participate in an Account Updater program?
There are two accounts updater programs offered by Skype: Visa Account Updater® and MasterCard Automatic Billing Updater®. You can set up these programs so that in case your credit card is stolen or expires, your auto-renewing subscriptions will not be interrupted. When your credit card expires, Skype may be contacted by your financial institution with information about your new credit card.
It is recommended that you contact your card provider for more information, or to opt out.
Is the charge a credit card authorization?
It is possible that you will see a pending transaction on your bank statement when you sign up for a free trial of €1, £1, $1 or equivalent when you sign up for one. You will not have to pay this amount, so don’t worry about that. As soon as your payment method is validated, the charge will be canceled and it will appear on your bank statement as a pending transaction.
Has your card been used fraudulently?
There is a possibility that your credit card has been used fraudulently in order to purchase Skype Credit. Our company takes every precaution to prevent fraudulent transactions from being processed, however, criminals have developed several methods to obtain the credit or debit card information of people in order to commit fraud.
I hope that you will be able to contact customer service as soon as possible if you suspect your card has been fraudulently used:
-
There are six digits in the first six digits of the credit card number used for the purchase, as well as the last four digits. If you are sending a credit card number, do not include the entire number.
-
On the back of the card, you will find the name of the cardholder.
-
It is important to know the country from which the card has been issued.
-
You will be able to find the exact dates (or order numbers) on your credit card statement of the fraudulent charges.
Whenever possible, we will attempt to locate and block the fraudulent orders relating to your credit/debit card in our system, and if applicable, we will refund the amount charged to your card.
To ensure that no further fraudulent charges are made on your card in the future, we strongly recommend that you contact your card issuer immediately regarding any unauthorized transactions.
