Tips for Sharing Software
Share an Application
Select Share > Application from the menu.
You can view a list of all the currently running applications on your computer by clicking on the list at the top.
There are several things you can do to help:
-
You can begin sharing a currently running application if you select it from the list of applications to the right of the window.
-
When you are trying to share an application that is not yet running, select Other Application if it is not currently running. It is from this dialog box that you will be able to see a list of all the applications that are currently running on your computer. In order to share an application, select it from the list of applications, then select Share.
The participant’s screen will display a sharing window where your application appears.
The following steps will guide you through the process of sharing an additional application:
-
It is possible to select Share from the application if it is running at the moment.
-
In the Session Control Panel, you will find a Share Application option in case the application is not currently running.
The sharing buttons appear in the upper-right corner of any minimized application when you open it with the sharing buttons enabled.
The Share button provides a drop-down arrow that enables you to switch between different applications. Just click on it.
Using the Session Controls panel or the title bar of the application that you no longer want to share, you will be able to stop application sharing by clicking the Stop Sharing icon on the bar of the application.
About Sharing Applications with Detailed Color (Windows)
When images are sent by Training Manager to participants, they are sent with 16-bit color mode, which is the same color mode your computer uses when you set it to “High Color” (16 bit). As a result, most shared applications can take advantage of this mode to display color in an accurate manner. However, there may be instances in which your shared application doesn’t display the color of some of your color images accurately on participants’ screens, such as pastel color gradients. An example of this would be color gradients appearing as a series of bands of different colors.
Using True Color mode in Training Manager will allow you to improve color accuracy and resolution in a shared application that is important to you. However, this mode can have an adverse effect on the performance of applications that are shared in this mode.
The following options are available to you when you choose to use True Color mode:
-
The image quality is improved (the image is not compressed).
-
Enhanced performance (some compression of images)
As far as performance is concerned, the speed at which an image appears on a participant’s screen, and as far as imaging is concerned, the quality of the color of the images shared by participants.
Share Applications with Detailed Color (Windows)
Before turning on True Color mode, ensure that your monitor display is set to True Color (either 24- or 32-bit color). For more information about setting options for your monitor, refer to Windows Help.
It is strongly recommended that you stop sharing an application if you are currently sharing one.
The Training Session Options can be found by selecting Training Session > Training Session.
To enable True Color Mode, select the tab at the top of the window.
Make sure that True Color mode is enabled.
The following options are available for you to choose from:
-
Better imaging
-
Better performance
Choose OK or Apply from the list of options.
About Sharing Applications with Detailed Color (Mac)
There are a number of display modes that you can choose from before you share an application or your desktop with others:
-
Better performance:
-
This is the mode that is used by default. You can use this mode if you would like to display your content faster than you’re used to doing so with the high image quality mode.
-
Better image quality:
-
Provides you with better image quality when you display your content. It may take longer for the shared content you share in this mode to be displayed than when you share it in better performance mode.
Presentations and shared documents will not be affected by changing the display mode.
Share Applications with Detailed Color (Mac)
Select the Webex Training > Preferences menu item from the Training Session window.
Click on the Display option.
It is recommended that you select either Better performance or Better image quality, depending upon your needs.
Click on the OK button.
Tips for Sharing Software
If you want to share software more effectively, here are some tips that can help you:
Scenario | Tip |
---|---|
If participants cannot see all the shared software without scrolling their sharing windows | Adjust their views of the shared software. They can reduce the size of the shared software in decrements, or scale it to fit inside their sharing windows. |
(Application sharing only) To save time during a training session | Ensure that any applications you intend to share are open on your computer. At the appropriate time during the training session, you can then quickly begin sharing an application, without waiting for the application to start. |
To improve the performance of software sharing | Close all applications that you do not need to use or share on your computer. Processor usage and memory on your computer is conserved, helping to ensure that Training Manager can send images of shared software quickly during a training session. Also, to ensure that a maximum amount of bandwidth is available for software sharing, close: |
Any applications that use bandwidth, such as instant messaging or chat programs. | |
Programs that receive streaming audio or video from the web. | |
If you are sharing an application for which the rendering of color on participants' screens is important | Improve color quality by turning on True Color mode. |
(Application and web browser sharing only) Avoid covering a shared application or web browser with another window on your computer's desktop. | A crosshatched pattern appears in participant sharing windows where the other window is covering the shared application or browser. |
(Application and web browser sharing only) If you want to switch your display between shared software and the Training Session window | Pause software sharing before you return to the Training Session window, and then resume sharing once you return to the shared application. Pausing software sharing conserves processor usage and memory on your computer while you view the Training Session window. |
(Application and web browser sharing only) If you have more than one monitor, when you share an application or web browser, the participants can see it on whichever monitor you display it. If you move the application or web browser to another monitor, it is still visible to the participants. | If you are sharing more than one application, the participants see the best view if you make sure that the applications are displaying on the same monitor. |
Because software sharing requires more bandwidth during a training session, we recommend that you use a dedicated, high-speed Internet connection when sharing software. However, if participants are using dial-up Internet connections, they may notice a delay in viewing or controlling shared software. | If you want to share a document, such as a Microsoft Word or Excel document, you can improve the training session experience for these participants by using document sharing instead of application sharing. |
