Advance notice of end of support for Zoom Rooms Controller on iOS 8 and iOS 9
With Zoom, video communications are frictionless, secure, and empower people to do more than ever before. In order to guarantee quality and security for our users, we will soon be removing support for Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x as part of the upcoming release of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad, version 5.10.
The Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 and subsequent versions will not be able to be upgraded or installed on Apple devices running Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x. A Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and subsequent versions will not be able to be upgraded to iPads running iOS 9.x or earlier, and Apple App Store policies will prevent iPads from installing Zoom Rooms Controller.
It is especially important to note that Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad no longer supports iOS 8.x and 9.x, which particularly affects the following iPad models that cannot be upgraded beyond iOS 9.3.6:
Model | Introduction Date | Hardware Models | Apple Support Status |
---|---|---|---|
iPad Mini (Gen 1) | 2012 | A1432 A1454 A1455 | Vintage |
iPad (Gen 3) | 2012 | A1403 A1416 A1430 | Obsolete |
iPad 2 | 2011 | A1395 A1396 A1397 | Obsolete |
It is important to note that Apple considers all of these models to be vintage, which means that the company no longer provides support for them (see the article Obtaining warranty service for your Apple product after it has expired).
Background information
According to Zoom’s history, the Zooms Room Controller for iPad has been supported on iOS versions 8.x and greater throughout the past few years. We have decided to terminate our support for iPad 8 and iOS 9 since there are no continuing updates from Apple for their operating systems and security systems (last updated August 2015 and July 2019 respectively). In order to support new application features that will be enabled by newer iOS releases and security concerns, we must terminate our support for these operating systems. Due to the difficulty of upgrading to newer versions of iOS than 9.3.6, the aforementioned iPad models will not be supported starting with Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad release 5.10, as they are not compatible with iOS releases above 9.3.6.
Zoom Rooms Controller version 5.10 Release Timeline
This was the version of Zoom Rooms Controller launched for the iPad in April, 2022, which was version 5.10. Newer versions of the application can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. You can upgrade to Zoom Rooms Controller 5.10 by using the latest iOS and the latest version of Zoom Rooms Controller app for iPad devices running iOS 10.x or greater; Zoom strongly recommends that your device should run the latest iOS and Zoom Rooms Controller, depending on your device.
How can I check the iOS version of my deployed iPad(s)?
Follow these steps to determine what version of iOS is currently installed on your device using the Zoom admin portal:
-
Zoom’s web portal can be accessed by signing in.
-
Select Device Management from the menu, then click Device List from the menu.
-
Make sure that the top left filter is set to iOS instead of All Platform OS.
-
The Zoom Room Assignment and Device Name of your devices need to be reviewed.
-
If you wish to export your device list to a CSV file for further processing, you can click the Export option.
How can I check if I have an iPad that cannot upgrade beyond iOS 9.3.6?
Compare the hardware model of your iPad with the list of hardware models that are given in the table above and on Apple’s support website under Identify your iPad Model.
What does this mean for iPads that cannot upgrade past iOS 9.3.6?
Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 will not be able to be installed on these iPad models. Version 5.9.3 of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad is still available for use on these devices. Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 will not be available to reinstall from the Apple AppStore if any disruption occurs that causes you to uninstall it or factory reset your device (thus erasing it).
Can I continue to use Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 on my iPad?
In the original plan, Zoom Rooms iPad Controller version 5.9.3, which supported iOS 8 and 9, would cease to operate on October 9th, 2022. Until Zoom’s Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy requires a minimum version of Zoom Rooms iPad Controller above 5.9.3, this date has been extended. Zoom Rooms iPad Controller versions 5.9.3 and earlier will cease to operate on iPads running iOS 8 and 9. The Zoom Rooms iPad Controller version 5.9.3 and earlier will no longer be able to operate on iPads running iOS 8 or 9 after that date. In the event that the iPad’s iOS needs to be upgraded or a transition to an alternative hardware platform as soon as possible, the administrator will receive a notification message informing them of what needs to be done. To stay informed of upcoming enforcement dates and minimum required versions of Zoom’s Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy, please monitor Zoom’s Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy regularly.
What steps should I take to prepare for this change?
In order to determine the types of devices deployed in your Zoom account, Zoom recommends going through iPads deployed as Zoom Room Controllers, Zoom Scheduling Displays or Zoom Rooms for Touch devices to determine what types of devices are included in your Zoom deployment. The following action is then recommended by Zoom, based on the capabilities of the device:
-
Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and future updates should be compatible with any device that can be upgraded to iOS 9.x or greater, so that they may be compatible with Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and future updates as well.
-
If any of your devices are not capable of upgrading above iOS 9.3.6, you should be considering replacing them with a new Zoom Room Controller or Scheduling Display that is capable of supporting Zoom Room Controller for iPad 5.10. You can find recommendations on migration options below.
-
Until the replacement occurs, you will be able to continue to use Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.9.3 following the instructions described above.
-
In the near future, it may be necessary to replace any devices that Apple considers to be “obsolete” or “vintage” in the near future. In the following section, you will find a list of recommendations for migrations.
Recommended migration options
-
Select a controller from the list of recommended hardware controllers in Zoom Rooms and deploy it. The controllers are compatible with both Windows and Macintosh Zoom Rooms, as well as Zoom Room Appliances.
-
Zoom Rooms offers a Hardware as a Service program that enables you to rent a new controller for a monthly fee that is affordable.
